Another week begins and it's time to start penciling in some shows. Tonight, The Concretes are back! The Scandinavian 8+ person band will be playing Bowery Ballroom. While over at Sin-e King of France, Less and Dawn Landes play a more intimate gig.
Tuesday night Guillemots, Levy, The Marina play Bowery. The name Guillemots has been overwhelming our inbox lately, but we've yet to give it a good listen. From what we can tell they're pretty mellow with some screaming...dramarock?
In Brooklyn Pinback and Pleaseeasaur are at Northsix (also at Irving Plaza Wednesday night). However, we'll opt for the Phoenix show at Bowery - trust us on this one and go (listen @ MySpace). We also hear Beirut is good, in a Rufus Wainwright sort of way - so try to catch them over at Knitting Factory. Irving is also on the bill and worth checking out, but be sure not to get there when Group Sounds is playing...copyrock?
Meanwhile, beware of flying objects and rage induced rock over at Webster Hall, where Anton Newcombe and his band, Brian Jonestown Massacre, will be taking the stage. How many songs do you think they'll get through? A much more toned down show will be happening at Mercury that night when Nada Surf (acoustic), Dangaru, True Love and Wanderbund play a benefit for NY Children.
Phew, with all of those Wednesday shows, there aren't too many going on Thursday. Maybe someone good will be playing the Bait Shop though.
On to Friday night when the much hyped up White Rose Movement (who we hear is a bit too much hyped up) will be playing Bowery with Five O'Clock Heroes and Foreign Islands. Mogwai is at Webster the same night (as well as Saturday night), while The Mooney Suzuki and Trick & The Heartstrings take the stage at Southpaw.
Then comes Saturday, the day we've been awaiting...it's the return of Ghostland Observatory! It's been almost a year since they played their first New York show at Movable Hype and now they're back and playing Mercury Lounge, so put on those dancin' pants and get yourself over there. Meanwhile, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Giant Drag and The Joggers at Irving Plaza, and even though we love those bands - it just won't be as fun as Ghostland.
What better way to end the weekend with the self-described "lamp rock" of Doveman at Tonic? That was rhetorical, now listen up:
