Walking around the West Village Saturday, we noticed two closings in the neighborhood:
Greenwich Brewing Company: (left) We were always surprised that this place made it as long as it did. We don't remember the food being particularly good (to be honest, we don't remember the food at all, which is never a good sign), but then again, beer is always a good draw, and they certainly had a decent selection.
Caffe Rosso: (right) We had never eaten here, despite walking by it a thousand times (also not a good sign), but our companion remembered it fondly as one of the first restaurants she had dined in upon moving to New York.

Know of a restaurant that's gone, but not forgotten? Let us know!

Dave's Potbelly on Christopher Street. Was sad to see that place go.
Also, is the Beatrice Inn, across the street from Caffe Rosso, still there? I'd heard the owner was selling. Great red-sauce joint.
Formerly Greenwich Brewing Company, the doorway at 418 Sixth Avenue once led to TRUDE HELLER'S, a club that inspired West 9th Street resident Hilly Cristal [who was then driving a truck for a living] to open his CBGB on the Bowery. :-D Ever wonder why 418 Sixth Avenue has such a curious catercorner doorway? Reason: when this apartment house was built in 1901, the Greenwich Savings Bank was on the first floor. On Sunday August 20th, 2006 I will be giving a tour in Gr Village: first stop VILLAGE Restaurant, 62 West 9th Street. http://MaeWest.blogspot.com
my liver will miss the gbc. :(
Didn't Caffe Rosso have them live sex shows?
gone but not forgotten: bendix. there was one on 8th and, like 24th or something, but i mourn the one on 2nd av & 10th st. EVERYTHING there was good, and it ranged from brunch to sandwiches to steak entrees and thai food (still the best pad see eew). always busy. why did they close? why??
"moshe peking" -- first really fancy sit-down kosher chinese restaurant. or even better -- "bernstein's on essex", now that was a pastrami sandwich!
The last time I was in NYC, I went to the Greenwich Brewing Company at 11:15am on a Sunday to have lunch and the door was locked....I got the attention of a waitress inside and asked her through the door what time they were going to open....she rudely turned around and didn't answer me. I stood there until 11:30am and the waitress refused my attempts to find out what time they opened, so I finally left.
Good riddance, rude bastards.
