It's hard to believe we haven't featured the New York Restroom map here before-- but after ten minutes of searching the archives, it seems like we haven't. So here it is: an ongoing effort to map clean, public restrooms throughout Manhattan-- they've currently got 237. [Related: Daddytype's guide to mensrooms with changing tables appears to have added a bunch more points.]
Sad, but related: someone was struck by a train while pooing on the tracks at the Greenpoint Avenue G station yesterday. Mini-editorial: the MTA really needs to reopen the bathrooms throughout the subway system-- surely there is some way to make them available and keep them clean. In Europe, the bathrooms in the metro systems are operated as concessions, just like the newsstands. You pay $1 or so to use the facilities, and the person who runs the bathroom keeps them clean.

Having bathrooms in the subway would never work. The union would want them paid something like $30 an hour and the $15 dollars or so it would take in as revenue would make it a money losing proposition. Secondly if they were unattended then the homeless would certainly make them their homes. Same with the street toilets, homeless shelters or 'cheap apartments'.
Interesting...I too have often wondered why they couldn't use a similar paid model as they do in Europe. I'd gladly pay a buck for clean facilities. I think Chris is right on about what the Union would do, but perhaps this could work in a few of the busy stations (especially where there are many transfers, so you don't have to go above ground).
Of course, I've also dreamed of Cadbury vending machines, electronic signs telling me where the next train is, and the privilege of not having to run to the center of the track to catch the G train. I'm surprised we don't share train cars with chickens and goats.
The New Yorker had a Talk of the Town piece on this website in the March 27th article. Its interesting that the creator of the site isn't even from NYC...

the F train at church ave in brooklyn has a bathroom. not clean, locked sometimes, but when stumbling off the train after a long night on the LES, that bathroom is a fucking godsend.
