Eliot Spitz on Pataki's JFK Idea

Attorney General - and frontrunner in the NY State gubernatorial race - Eliot Spitzer laid out his transportation priorities to the Regional Plan Association yesterday, and on the list: the Second Avenue Subway, the LIRR link to Grand Central, and replacing the Tappan Zee Bridge. But he's less enthusiastic about the JFK rail link from downtown Manhattan. Pataki's been hot on the idea of a rail link since 2004. Could it be because the federal government okayed $2 billion to go to the project? Anyway, showing his true optimistic political stripes, Spitzer also said he'd try to put the MTA on track. Well, we don't know how he could do worse than Pataki, unless we plumb our nightmares.

Spitzer's most vocal opponent for the Democratic bid, Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, wasn't that impressed with the speech, saying, "He lays out a bunch of different things, a bunch of different ideas that sound good, except he doesn't talk about how he's going to accomplish it. He doesn't talk about how he's going to pay for it."

Not ignoring the rebuilding that will some day happen at the World Trade Center site, downtown is not a growth market for commerical office space. The number of residential projects seems to increase every week. Considering the A train gets close enough to JFK and the Airtrain finishes the trip I just don't see the point of spending money on a rail link.

There already are two rail links from JFK to Manhattan (what about that Airtrain thingy that they just built, and oh yeah the subway)? I think for most people living in lower Manhattan, a cab fare is not really a big expense, either? If you don't like the trip - move to Queens or Brooklyn!

This project is a bunch of pork if you ask me. There are plenty of ways to get to the airport from Manhattan, and plenty of existing schools and roads that need work worse. I live an hour from the nearest airport and travel often, it's a pain but at least I can get there. If you don't like the trip - move to midtown, Queens or Brooklyn!

How about an air train from the Atlantic Center? It's often cheaper to travel via car from Manhattan than some parts of Brooklyn and Queens (especially from the airport, since so many cab drivers don't seem to know their way around).

But then again, I'm one of those crazy people who takes the A train to the Airtrain. If you set aside enough time, it's the most relaxing way to go.

I've just been staying at home not getting anything done. I guess it doesn't bother me. Shrug. I haven't been up to anything. I haven't gotten much done today.
