We hope you've got your padded spandex and your cushy bike seat, because May is bike month here in New York City. Organized by the good people at Transportation Alternatives, there are over 150 great events going on all about the city. While some of the events have already happened, there are tons of events left (the month is so jam packed that there were events in April and there are some in June) including some of the bigger ones starting tomorrow.
Each borough president is having an event, and Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión kicks it off with a ride to a free breakfast. Saturday is the DOT's Bike to Shea, where you can see the Mets play the Braves (should be a good game). Also Saturday is the Streetart and Graffiti Tour, which Gothamist's own Jake Dobkin helped organize. If that's not enough cycling for you, you can finish off the weekend with Bike New York’s Five Borough Bike Tour. The annual event, now in its 29th year, is the largest recreational cycling event in the United States. Those participating can ride the streets and highways of NYC traffic-free on a 42-mile route.
And if you're getting some saddle sores, here's an entry from About.com about preventing them. Ouch. For the men out there that spend lots of time on their bikes, we hope that you've read this NY Times article - at least if you're planning on reproducing, that is.
Finally, because we just can't get enough of TransAlt, they also released their 2006 bike maps today.

Every day is Bike Month.
Damn Yo! my bike got stolen during the Illegal Immigrant march. I fucking locked it up right next to the supreme court building near the end of the march and it was gone an hour later. i had that bike for 13 years and never once a problem until an army of mexicans stole it. I later saw a whole bunch of mexicans going up and down centre street trying to undo the locks on the bikes. I knew it was one of them but they didn't have my bike and it was a gang of em against little ol me. Guess whose side I'm on now on this Immigration debate.
Hey, when is Scooter Month??? :-)
Yes! The fewer people in cars, the better.
I'd do the Five Borough Bike tour, but it is too early in the morning. It starts around 7AM, which is a very uncivilized hour. Ten or eleven would be much better.
This year it happens to be on the same day as the Fort Green Association House tour which is going into the Williamsburgh Bank tower.
TransAlt is my favorite environmental organization in NYC. They are extremely focused, realistic, professional, passionate and know their stuff. If we had had more non-profits like them, the world would be a better place to live.
Sorry, jackblack, but I'm not sure what's dumber... the fact that (i) you locked your bike next to a government building in NYC after 9/11, (ii) that you expected it to be there when you got back, or (iii) that you blamed "the mexicans" for taking it. Let's see if you can put the pieces together now, Archie!
