Trangleball - Sport of the Future?

2006_05_strangleball.jpg

Last month when Gothamist was in Coney Island for opening day, we spotted a perplexing activity taking place on the beach. A few people were throwing balls at what seemed like a wooden triangle in the middle of some tubes laid out in a circle. After closer inspection (like reading the sign), we found that this bizarre game was called Trangleball. Essentially, the game involves throwing a ball off the center triangle and your opponent has to try and catch it. If they don't, you get a point.

Perhaps the future is now? Or is it never? We're not quite sure. But it does look fun and easy to set up.

if your oppenent gets a point by not catching the ball, what is their incentive to ever catch the ball?

seems like a direct ripoff of the elementary school game, boxball.

will it be in the beijing olympics?

Beach version of "stoop ball"?

This is played all over Long Island and Fire Island. It's set up and ready to go. Love it, love it, love it.

is bulletball the one that was on american inventor or whatever that abc show is called? b/c that game looked like crap. though, i do feel sorry for the guy that poured his life into that.

this game was invented in Fire Island about 20 years ago and has been spreading from there. Its a great deal of fun...

lol at the bullet ball comment.

this looks like a stoner game. like the game my floormates had freshman year that was basically hackey sack with a lighter. instead of hack

^^ that's what I was thinking too.

there is a much better game then this, called SquareBall, invented on Narragansett Beach, in Rhode Island, by me.

I am always impressed by the stupid things that hipsters in Brooklyn come up with. Some days, I'm surprised that I haven't already shot myself in the face.

I have played this on the holodeck numerous times. Great fun! I like to play 3D chess afterwards to unwind. A balanced meal of entertainment!

shouldn't it be called "pyramid-ball"?

after further exploration on the trangleball site, it seems like they actually have tournaments on fire island. crazy!

Actually, I did see Trangleball and it's inventor at the American Inventor auditions in New York. We both made it into the next round and got flown out to Los Angeles, where we were both, sadly, cut...

Wait a second, is that thing in the middle a triangle or a *pyramid*? A ball isn't going to bounce funny off a flat triangle. And by the picture in the article, you can't tell exactly what that yellow thing is.

For a better explanation, you can read the rules for 3-on-3 trangleball here...

this game looks great is it sold in the stores yet? if so does anyone know where i can buy one?
Can you get a good workout playing this game?

I've just been staying at home not getting anything done. I guess it doesn't bother me. Shrug. I haven't been up to anything. I haven't gotten much done today.
