Gothamist Band of the Week: End of the World

teotw1.jpg

To be perfectly honest, we didn't know a single thing about The End of the World till a friend emailed us recently telling us to check them out. We did and we really dig it. These guys seem to have a perfect grip on making really accessible music in the vain of Spoon and the Walkmen. Really don't sound much like either of those bands actually, but the attitude and the execution is totally there. Watch out for them once the full length comes out. They’ve got a highly praised EP out right now, and will be kicking it out at the Cake Shop this Friday with The Narrator and Oxford Collapse.

You can listen to a couple of their songs here and here. More on Myspace.

I am GAY... The Bravery is GAYER

omg, so excited for the show tonight!

  • i was talking about the Editors ripping off the Bravery, not EOTW. with End of the World the Spoon/Walkmen comparisons are pretty accurate, both live and on record (and they come across the same way - Walkmen seem more subdued on record but a little wild onsage, as do these guys)

I saw these guys recently at a party at Fontana's and while those website songs don't seem to be the same as what they were playing live, I'd be suprised if they were ripping off the Bravery -- kind of a different sound. Their live show was actually incredible. Great voice. Such a rarity.

  • also, though these comments have obviously steered away from the band that ths post was about, I would like to add that the EOTW guys are really nice and very fine people to hang out with.

  • kevin, it has nothing to do with how popular they are - I was excited to hear their album and then when I did all that stood out was that they seemed to be ripping off a Bravery song (i think it was track 3 or 4...), while sounding like a half-assed Interpol the rest of the time.

kevin, i dare you to go to the cake shop and check out the end of the world and look me in the face and tell me that it wasnt totally awesome, wholly moving. if you disagree ill buy you a huge vegan oatmeal cookie from upstairs.

im going to have to pass onyour suggestions.

Sir Awesome> You need to discover early Throbbing Gristle (like in some of their live performances); I doubt you'd get bored. Hard of hearing maybe, but certainly not bored. And I recommend Coil as well, but that's me.

What, Bryan, Editors too popular for you? I think they've written some of the best rock tracks as of late. But that's my opinion (and obviously many others'). I know The Deli is all about what's "hot in NYC"; so sorry if many of us don't care about all you hipsters trying to play [tired] music.

  • my band (MiG) played with these guys in Dallas in March and I was impressed by their show - the cd doesn't blow me away though.

and kevin g - the Editors? are you kidding me? talk about derivative crap - that stuff is wretched.

ive seen this band more than a handful of times and i dont think that their EP recorded at the very earliest inception can do justice to their current songs and live performances. i think they stand out because their music seems like true songwriting...artfully crafted pieces that read like tragic novels and heated affairs.

myspace has more current songs...the ep is a little more on the poppy side.

i would really be interested in knowing what wasnt bore the shit out of me music

  • music snob

    Another Gothamist recommended bore-the-shit-out-me band.

  • Kevin G

Another derivative band; the only worth checking out as of late in my opinion are Film School and Editors. Surprise; NOT New Yorkers.

Those two jams are pretty old ones...two songs from their upcoming album can be heard at myspace.com/theendoftheworld

  • andy

yea so- 1 part strokes, 1 part walkmen, and 3 parts affected, derivative rip-off artists. Gothamist seriously needs some to get some music taste...

  • Oh, hey: Brooklyn's finest, The Pathways, are also on this bill! Just thought you should know.
