Daring subway theft: A thief managed to steal a purse at the Broadway Lafayette station and sneak away through an secret door. The Post says that the robber "wove through startled commuters to a narrow catwalk that extends beyond the platform" and then "vanished through a secret emergency door to the street." Secret emergency door to the street? The subways were actually shut down, in case he had run into the tunnels, but this sounds like someone with an intimate knowledge of the subways.
In more disturbing news, a man was killed by a train at the Kew Gardens station in Queens this morning.

are TWU [lazy] workers in that bad of shape that they're stealing from the very people who pay their salaries?
I'd imagine it was either an inside job or from someone who just knows the tunnels - a mole person, someone who walks them, you never know.
Actually, I see people coming in and out of what I'm guessing is the 'secret door' more often than you'd think. There's a yellow hatch in the median on Houston down by Mott street - I've seen people pop in and out several times in the few years I've lived there. I've seen a similar hatch on 42nd between 5th and 6th too, although that one opens up onto the sidewalk on the south side of the street, so probably harder to go in and out unnoticed.
I would concur with Jen in that it is most likey a mole person, or perhaps Roger Toussant.
I was in the first car of the F train as it pulled into Bway/Lafayette. There were about 10 cops waiting on the platform for the power to be turned off before they went down the tunnel. It took at least 5-10 minutes to get the power turned off, so I'm not surprised he got away (are Toussant's friends in charge of the power???)
One female cop was on the ground screaming about the pain in her leg - I thought she had been shot, but it turned out she had fallen onto the tracks as she chased the guy.
