One of Gothamist's new favorite blogs is The Gowanus Lounge-- it's reporting on real estate and urban development around the city. Today it reports on the acquisition of the Jewish Press Building on Third Avenue and Second Street, one of the last obstacles blocking the progress of the proposed Leviev Boymelgreen "Gowanus Village" project. The company plans to develop the entire lot between Carroll Street and Third Street, from Third Avenue all the way to the Gowanus Canal. That's a lot of redevelopment! Current plans project 400 units on 375,000 square feet of space. The new Whole Foods (ETA still unknown) will be built just a block away on the corner of 3rd Street, so while the toxic sludge in the canal might turn future tenants into mutants, at least they will be well fed.

I think it's awesome that they are developing the Gowanus Canal and evirons area. It has been forgotten for so long and was so important in its day. I always thought it was a crime how people let it get to this state. I have so much exploring there and am looking forward to it becoming a real neighborhood again.

Not all in the community are so sure about this project. This land is quite a brownfield and the canal water measures the highest level of pathogens in the NY harbor--that's after the so called cleanup the GCC Development Corp speaks so highly of.
To actually clean this water will require use of land along side especially since the source of pathogens are from the city sewer outlets. More houses with more sewage and more concrete will hurt more than it will help.
There is no plan to cleanup the canal. Building housing there certainly isn't a cleanup plan. If this goes forawrd we will have people livingin rental units atop contiminated land that will continue to more contimination from the local water way while also being exposed to the pathogen vapors off the surface of the canal water. Our community may be much worse off as we build housig to the edge of this canal.
