Actually, the facade of the building is protected as a historical monument. The name's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Max:

Apology accepted. ;) Cute link.

And I wasn't agreeing with it being taken down. I rather like the sign being there, and while I don't have any emotional attchment to the building (as I was a new Stuy grad), I think it's a cool bit of history. Or at the very least, not hurting anyone. I just think I took offense at the tone and silliness of the renaming issue. I might have just been hungry though, cause re-reading it doesn't seem to steam my pot anymore. Go figure. Possibly representing my half of the sex? Score one for the irrational mood swing cliches!

i would just like to add that any new yorker that doesn't know who peter stuyvesant is should be deported back to their home state.

I think they wanted to tear the whole facade down a few years ago and the building was made an historic monument. So it'll never change.

Catherine, you're half right. I was being a bit of a douche (just representing my half of the sex?) but still, what purpose would it serve to take that Stuy carving out and put in a new one? Aren't there in fact a few schools now in that building? And aren't there like ten bajillion better ways that the DoE could be spending their not nearly limitless cash? It's not like the old building is ever going to stop being the old Stuy - well, until they tear it down to build some condos...

And just to be clear, I am well aware that the name of Stuyvesant Square predates the school.

Sorry again for being such a douche.

Hey, Max... I think the point is that it is no longer Stuyvesant High School and is now Health and Human Services (at least it was 6 years ago). It's not as if the rest of the surroundings need to be renamed, and even as an ex-Stuy kid I'm not arrogant enough to think the square and the 'town' were so named because of my high school.

In other words, quit being such a douche.

You young whippersnappers with your fancy building and escalators. In my day, that was Stuyvesant High School, and we'd have to climb up up five flights of crowded stairs every period, carrying all our books for the day because we didn't have lockers, and we liked it.

Oh yeah, the DoE totes should have bothered getting up there and redoing that. Yeah, and while they're at it the city should of also bothered to rename that square to the west of the building, and probably the 'town' to the east, right?
