Anti-War Rally Draws Really Big Numbers

2006_04_29_AP_protest.jpg

Gothamist is getting reports from all over that the anti-war protest currently going on down Broadway is a shockingly large one. Though it is only supposed to go from Union Square down Broadway to Worth Street, we're hearing reports of protesters backing up all the way to Madison Square!

Anybody got any photos? Reports? Etc.? Put 'em in the comments and we'll update this post as more info becomes available (i.e. when the rally actually finishes).

Update Here are some more photos sent in by reader Bucky:

Update 2 Lots of goodies are starting to flow into flickr, like this photo from ianqui:

And this one from Boss Tweed:

There were even old people from the Abe Lincoln Brigade there:

And of course, the obligatory end-of-rally-aerial-shot from jgo ★:

Special Bonus! Today was also the 19th annual Sikh Day Parade, from 40th and Broadway to Madison Square Park. Walking north along the anti-war route, the last couple of blocks blended almost seamlessly into the Sikh Day events-- of course, there were more turbans and curried food!

HOlY SHIT! it's huge. They are marching down broadway screaming shit like "God is dead!" "we will kill you all!" like they want to start some shit. Fucking anti war activists! If you didn't want the war you should have voted against Bush in the first place. He's in power because of your ineptness.

user-pic

They did vote against Bush, often multiple times in multiple states along with dead people and illegals.

This country is run by elected officials, not by threatening mob.

user-pic

who exactly are you addressing your comments to Jackblack? I doubt many in that march voted for Bush, in fact during the election of 2000 more Americans voted for Gore. But lets not get into that. Lets just be thankful we live in a country where you can march down the street and shout whatever the heck you want no matter how inappropriate it is.

Bush is more evil than Bin Laden?

Vaporize these cretins.

user-pic

Larry,

That sign is indeed unfortunate and gives those working for peace a bad name. Do not judge those opposed to war by this one person.

user-pic

I always rely on the Gothamist commentors for thoughtful and nuanced insights.

Vaporize them indeed.

"Bush is more evil than bin Laden"

Do I need to comment on this one?
Nancy Pelosi and Micheal Moore may indeed think so. No wonder democrats have been losing elections for decades.

user-pic

deedee: As a progressive opposed to this war, Michael Moore and Pelosi do not speak for me, nor do they speak for many progressives.

Democrats are losing because of their timidity and lack of ideas, not because of some ignorant protester holding a sign at a peace rally.

Still though, let's talk about what this sign is claiming. Does invading a country and killing at least 10,000 innocent civilians (oh excuse me, they were "collateral damage") not fall under normal moral judgements? Do we give Bush a free pass on that? How about his support for murderous dictators around the world?

Another day, another protest, what else is new ? I believe in the right to protest. I also think the occupation should end sooner rather than later, but after three years of protests against the occupation of Iraq, what has changed ?

It's like people who buy hybrids, they feel good about "saving" the environment when in reality they're not making a difference (we're still years away from that happening). I'm sorry if I sound pessimistic, but reality bites. Well at least the young people in the protest can hook up tonight.

user-pic

mike (and other progressives): has no one been paying attention? the majority of civilians killed in iraq are not from american troops but from muslim fundamentalists. this is the supreme irony. the west moves in to establish a democracy (for its own reasons), the muslim world feels humiliated, resorts to murdering its own people, and the left think bush is a murderer.

It's just extremely unfortunate that we can't bring the troops home now or anytime in the foreseeable future. Don't get me wrong, I was against the war when it was only a glint in Rummy and Dubya's eyes and I'm still opposed to it. But as Colin Powell said, we broke it and now we have to pay for the mess. And that idiot Dubya's so incredibly deluded that even years from now, he's going to be saying with his dying breath that this was something that absolutely, positively had to be done. I just hope his unparalleled incompetence doesn't take the rest of us with his dying breath, especially where Iran is concerned.

I think republican party has just found its campaign poster for the upcoming elections.

This reminds what kind of people democrats are.

Republicans hate bin Laden while they think democrats are annoying. Democrats hate Bush while they think bin Laden is annoying.

dan and deedee- when you emerge from your ideological fog, please let us know, and we can continue the conversation.

I would be there if I didn't have to work a 12 hour shift today at the hospital, but I have to laugh at all the right wing extremists who stop by when the true americans come out to support democracy.
BTW, Bush and Bin Laden's families were/are in business together. It was the repugs who gave binladen cash money back in the 80's/90's.
So It is not a stretch to say that they are mirror images.
Learn your history. Stop watching fox news.

This is always funny when extremists talk about democracy and true americans. Democrats have been losing elections for decades.

I guess this is what you mean by true americans and democracy:
"The [five]activists - all employees of the John Kerry campaign - are accused of flattening the tires on 25 vehicles rented by the state Republican Party to get out the vote and deliver poll watchers Nov. 2."
Convicted this month, the son of the democratic congresswoman included..
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/04/26/goptiresslashed.ap/index.html

I set aside your obsession with Fox News. You are probably proud of Dan Rather and MSM.

Anyway, this picture is a good example how democrats see the world.

How come no one likes War? I think War is awesome. I'm fucking all the soldiers girlfriends while they are at war.

user-pic

these hipsters are oblivious to the real problem, the combination of iran and russia working together...

I think comparing Bush and Bin Laden is wrong - bin Laden killed thousands and must be defeated. But the policies embraced by both the Bush administration and other Republicans have created more harm than good.

I must ask - why do conservatives hate "liberal media bias"? What is wrong with conservatives? I take a look at people like David Horowitz and of all the issues he could have focused on, like solving poverty or ending hunger, Horowitz decides to tackle evil liberal college professors.

Here't the truth: when the mainstream media covers a Republican screwing up, it is not because the mainstream media has a partisan bias like Fox News - it's because that Republican screwed up. I've read that studies were done at Stanford and it showed that "media bias" is a matter of the perception and perspective of the individual.

It was a huge demonstration. It reminded me of the anti-war protests back in the era of the Vietnam War.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/monkeyone/137039211/

Which war is the assembly protesting, really?
Has anyone seen United 93 today?

"Which war is the assembly protesting, really?"

Good question, I think the reply right before this one sums it up pretty well. Same people trying to relive their youth and "make a difference".

I totally disagree with them but I do applaud their spirit. It seems that a lot of them just want to be a part of something and I guess with the economy humming along they don't have much to work at except Iraq and illegal aliens.

"I'm already against the next war." True Democrat. Against something even before knowing what it's about.

jack- there's plenty of things "to work on" and to be a part of, in case you hadn't noticed. Guess you're too busy with your own life to think about other people, your duty to country, or your planet.

This is a PARTIAL list of the current administrations scandals, for those poor souls who have no idea what thousands are outside protesting about.

ACLU stands by bin laden - how I'm not surprised.

never mind, thank god these idiots will never win elections thanks to people like you and the protester with the sign "Bush is more evil than Bin Laden". This pretty much sums up the policy of democratic party. Keep up the good work!

There were thousands of people at the demonstration, yet some commenters are critiquing it as if the message in the lead photo ("BUSH IS MORE EVIL THAN BIN LADEN") represented the opinions of all the participants. Perhaps Gothamist could have done a better job of lending context to that image.

The website for the demonstration takes the following positions:

End the war in Iraq
Bring all our troops home now!

No war on Iran!
Stand up for immigrant and women's rights!

Unite for change -- let's turn our country around!
The times are urgent and we must act.

Too much is too wrong in this country. We have a foreign policy that is foreign to our core values, and domestic policies wreaking havoc at home. It's time for a change. Are those positions really that controversial at this point in time? Aren't they at least worth a respectful debate?

Far left spam? That is rich. Did you even read the post deedee? It is a list of scandals covered by mainstream, conservative and liberal media outlets. I would say it is the paid far right spammers who are out in force today, doing their job for the RNC spamming middle of the road websites like gothamist

I'd love nothing more than to see our current administration tossed out on its collective red asses, but that sign is truly unfortunate.

So I ask, who side are you guys on? A million friggin' people at the protest and you have to show *that* sign? You get that many people in one area, you're gonna get a couple of dopes, do we have to show them as representative of the conscience of this group?

And Deedee and the rest of you guys, I would suggest if love this war so much, then maybe get off the sidelines and enlist. Our once-mighty military has been so depleted by this tragic folly that they could use all the folks they could get. And you might get a free trip to Tehrahn out of the deal.

Why that photograph first? Because it is in chronological order. When I started I initially had no photos to work with. Before anyone got anything up on flickr (or e-mailed to gothamist) that photo was put up on the AP, so I used it to get the ball rolling.

In fact it was the first photo put up on the AP, uploaded at 1:42 PM (kinda interesting choice, no?).

The minute other photos started coming in, I started posting them.

In any event, by tomorrow's newspapers the size of this march will be very difficult to question.

David, Tim N., great posts.

As to the polemical photo which has prompted so many reactions, Bin Laden is dangerous but not a serious threat to the American constitution. Bush really is. "Evil" is not a helpful word; "Dangerous" is.

That Bin Laden sign was perfectly representative of the idiocy on parade today. There were many signs equally foolish and offensive. Not to mention the usual fans of the cop killer Mumia, several socialist organizations and groups calling for people to "smash the borders". Not that I'm complaining - the liberals refusal to kick the lunatics out of the tent just makes them unelectable.

Tim - You are way too smart to buy into the pathetic "chickenhawk" argument. Should people be required to join the police department in order to take a position on how and when cops are used? And the military is overwhelmingly Republican - they would laugh at the freaks on parade today.

The city that lost 3000+ innocent people to throat slitting genocidal murderous islamofacists now is infested by the likes of stinking clueless raving barking Birkenstock wearing dhimmis... Throw in race pimp Sharpton, Jesse"Love Child Shakedown Artist" Jackson and Cindy "No Blood for Israel" Sheehan and you complete the collection of shitheads.

The Bush/Bin Laden sign is exactly the belief of everyone of the riffraff attending that march and the reason why libtards and DemoRATS are dead as doorknobs in the USA

I saw some of the police prep for the event this morning when I started by bike ride (by going to Tekserve to get replacement iPod earphones) this afternoon when heading home, I saw and heard some hecklers who were in an SUV waitng at Broadway and Houston who were waiting for the march to go by. What did they yell? "God bless George Bush!" Quite funny.

Sounds like the Bridge and Tunnel crowd.

"And Deedee and the rest of you guys, I would suggest if love this war so much, then maybe get off the sidelines and enlist."??

And Abandon the Keyboard Kommandos in their hour of need??? Tim, please...

This was a great parade (even though it was so small) since it shows so clearly what democratic party is about. Centrist democrats (democrats with brains as I call them) would likely win the next elections, but thanks to the "we must understand bin laden/bush is behind 9/11" wackos democrats will never win anything. Ah, Charlie "heidifleiss demolition expert" Sheen, Micheal Moore, Nancy Pelosi, Cindy Sheehan, Al Sharpton I love you. Keep up the good work!

I'm not totally satified with bush admin (they have increased budget for education/medicare and other socialist purposes enormously..Iraq war costs are small compared to this extra socialist spending so I agree with democrats on this one) but at least bush is trying to get rid of the terrorist regimes. 50 years of status quo in middle east did not keep us safe.

Can you do this kind of demonstrations every day? I'm afraid that people may forgot you and start believing that democrats are not just binladen loving activists.

Noles - First, hey. Second... I know I quote my old man to an annoying degree, but if you'll indulge me a little further, he used to say that people who love wars so much ought to go fight in them. And my friend, he was so far to the right he made you look like Joe friggin' Stalin.

Actual sign at a conservative gathering, 1994: "Lee Harvey Oswald, where are you now that your country needs you?" That sentiment no more represents you than that dingaling with the Bin Laden sign represents me. You and I both know that in gatherings like these you always get fringe elements. Instead of focusing on the fact that thousands of people are so sick over what this administration is doing in the name of the country we love that they would come out and march, they make it easy for some of the morons above to dismiss this as a gathering of aging hippies and frustrated ex-socialists.

Tim: I can't imagine conservative demonstration with David Duke marching with signs of Hitler, KKK or Bin Laden. They would be kicked out immediately. When democrats gather (conventions, fundraisers, demonstrations) the lunatics and fringe elements are guests of honour, from Micheal Moore to Charlie "heidifleiss" Sheen and other Moveon.org "Bush was behind 9/11" wackos. But I'm not complaining. On the contrary, I salute you.

I supported Bill Clinton's policy (on Kosovo, and the findings that Iraq had WMDs) but since those days, democrats have lost it. They don't care anything but winning elections.

Mike commented:
"That sign is indeed unfortunate and gives those working for peace a bad name."
and
"Democrats are losing because of their timidity and lack of ideas, not because of some ignorant protester holding a sign at a peace rally."

Mike-

How is the "Bush is more evil than Bin Laden" sign unfortunate? How is the protester holding it "ignorant"?
The protester is making a provocative statement about rhetoric vs. reality, based on the material realities of lives lost and blood shed on the ground in Iraq.

"Still though, let's talk about what this sign is claiming."

Good idea.

"Does invading a country and killing at least 10,000 innocent civilians..."

Where do you get that number? The most conservative estimate - admitted to by Bush himself - is over 30,000. According to Les Roberts (one of the world's top epidemiologists and lead author of the Lancet report from October 2004) "the estimates of 20,000 to 30,000 civilian deaths cited in the American press are too low, most likely by a factor of five or ten." Meaning, a more likely estimate is in the range of 100,000 to 300,000.

Bin Laden is responsible for 4,500 deaths at most during the last couple decades. With such a disparity as to quantity of victims, it seems that objecting to the characterization of Bush as "more evil" is to subscribe to the racist/tribalist belief that Bin Laden's victims are of greater quality (less worthy of being slaughtered than those people over there).

Tim: I can't imagine conservative demonstration with David Duke marching with signs of Hitler, KKK or Bin Laden.

Um, David Duke ran for governer of Louisiana as a Republican.

Can you remind me when Bush advocated the destruction of jews/muslims/blacks or someother race?
Bin Laden and Iranian president are openly advocating new holocaust. This is pretty much what Hitler was doing in 1937.

Anyway, thanks for your comment. This reminds all serious people that they should never vote for democrats no matter what republicans do.

Tim: I can't imagine conservative demonstration with David Duke marching with signs of Hitler, KKK or Bin Laden.

Salute to Israel Parade.

Tens of thousands of Orange Shirted Gush Katif supporters marching right alongside Mike Bloomberg and the rest of the NYC political establishment.

Gush Katif = Israeli Version of the Klan.

Too bad none commented on that.

Bin Laden and Iranian president are openly advocating new holocaust. This is pretty much what Hitler was doing in 1937.

You mean like the way the Israeli settlers advocate extermination of the Palestinians and the way your boy Jack Abramoff sends them money?

You know, that Jack Abramoff, the one who Bush lied about knowing.

I was at the corner of worth and broadway when I encountered the protest, which I didn't know was going on. The interesting thing at that corner was a pen that the police had created for counter-protesters, e.g. "pro-war" people. I passed by that pen at 12 noon, and there were 2 guys in there. I passed by it again at about 3:30, at the height of the march, and there were 5 people there; one old dude, 1 woman, and 3 demented wierd-looking guys, basically yelling "better dead than red". They were all white; the marchers were pretty diverse; people of all races, and age groups (a fair number of elderly people), families, unions and working people, artists, college students. It was a startling contrast to me. Next time, I expect all the "virtual" pro-war commenters here to be in that pen to represent.

My other comment is my favorite sign that I saw, a picture of Bush and Cheney that said underneath "Gas holes"

Does Bush need to be worse than Bin Laden in order for him to be impeached? Jesus, Bush is a freaking fundamentalist ignorant moron who is destroying the economy, the environment, education, healthcare our freedoms (and the list goes on and on...).

Most Americans feel that this country should be a positive example of freedom and democracy for the rest of the world, yes? So let's start comparing our president to truly great people and see how he holds up.

This country is going down the tubes when the best we can say is that our president isn't as horrible as Bin-f-ing-laden.

p.s. keep protesting

Tim - I was there today and I'm telling you that sign was perfectly representative of the crowd. Not everyone was that far gone, but that sign did not stand out - there were hundreds of equally idiotic statements. So I understand your analogy but it doesn't apply - you would never find this kind of lunacy at a conservative gathering. deedee hit that on the head.

Smarter Trolls - The Republican party publicly disowned Duke and he was not the party's nominated candidate. Too bad the Democrats don't have the guts to do the same to Cindy Sheehan, Cynthia McKinney, etc. So it looks like we do need some smarter trolls around here than you and SD.

I recall a large crowd at the NRC in NYC wearing giant "flip-flops" on their hands waving and chanting -- not a particularly dignified look.

God you are a fucking idiot.

George Bush spoke at Bob Jones University. You know, that Bob Jones University. You know, where interracial dating is forbidden. John McCain is currently sucking up to Pat Robertson, James Dobson, Tony Perkins and the entire Christian coalition.

Every Republican I know thinks the earth is 6000 years old, God created it in 7 days, Saddam planned 9/11, and that homosexuality is sinful and should be outlawed.

Whether or not Bin Laden is as evil as Bush or Bush is as evil as Bin laden is a matter of opinion.

But whether or not the earth is 6000 years old is a matter of science. And every Republican out there panders to "intelligent design".

So please just shut up and stop embarassing yourself. You got fucking owned today. Just crawl back in your hole.

Or enlist. Oh wait. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA. Sorry. I was engaging in a bit of fantasy there.

Smarter - Sure, whatever you say. We were "owned" today - just like the Republican Convention, right? And we know how that ended. Please feel free to march with the pacifists, communists and anarchists every weekend. It is great entertainment and just reinforces the left's kook factor. BTW, I know a lot more Republicans than you and they believe none of those things.

Excatly. Anyway, we should try to calm down and stop this partisan bickering. We have common goals:

Democrats want to march with these wackos.

Republicans want democrats to march with these wackos.

Isn't this great? We actually agree here. Keep up the good work! Long live Cindy Sheehan and Bin Laden!

this discussion is so child-like -

bush & bin laden are both mere finger puppets -

bush by the numbers is closer to hitler than osama (family valves)

at a cost of more than $275,000,000,000 (fiscal responsibility)

losing elections for years? maybe you forgot about the previous administration who presided over a period of unprecedented prosperity, and reached for diplomatic peace in the middle east -

boo-hoo i don't like that picture, i'm going to call you a name, either left-wing or liberal, because those are the only two words i know -

man i hope the bird-flu kills off all the stupid people -

Bwuaaaaaa,
nola got owned? someday.
but his kids may someday bring grandpa some curious george grandkids.
maybe not, if they enrolled in BJU.

I was at Union Square as the crowd was assembling.
The crowd was predominantly composed of aging hippies so Harris Graber #23 was right on when he said it looked like a protest of the Vietnam war - I think the same exact people were protesting back then. They had their chance to change the world, but must have been engaged in more material pursuits all these years. Now with the children raised and retirement staring them in the face (i.e. idleness) they again feel the need to protest. THEIR GENERATION is in charge - come on!

Additionally, there is a difference between the use of force to liberate a nation from a dictator and the use of force for conquest. Hint: countries that engage in conquest don't set up representative democracies.

How many French civilians were killed when the U.S. liberated Nazi occupied France?

BTW, I saw some far left crazy spewing venom and wondered what he would do if I pushed him to the ground and took his sign? Would this "peace protestor" defend himself? try to get his sign back? Or would he try to give me a hug? Maybe he would light and candle and wish for me to not be so mean?

There are mean people in the world. I am happy that my government protects me from them and protects the American way of life, our democracy, and economic freedom. Because if this country wasn't so great and didn't offer so much opportunity, would 12 million people be here illegally?

Oh really? tough guy?
How bout a charge of assault with your internet balls?
You wouldn't last a night in 100 centre.

You think the sign "Bush is more evil than Bin Laden" is "idiotic". Would you care to support that with some reasoning?

Bush has been responsible for far more deaths than Bin Laden ever was. If Bush had been doing his job and reacted to the clear and specific warnings given to him instead of doing nothing, then Bin Laden might never have had a chance to kill anyone.

Bush and his government systematically lied to this country to start a pointless, grueling, expensive war that's left thousands of Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqis dead (and tens of thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis mutilated, this one fact alone will have a greater long-term impact on Americans than 9/11).

We watched while Bush sat, stunned like a deer in the headlights for days, and we lost New Orleans. We lost New Orleans and the vast expensive Department of Homeland Security that Bush had set up to protect us after 9/11 turned out to be not only unable to provide help after Katrina but to actively prevent help from others. Another thousand or so dead.

Bin Laden kills what he perceives as his enemies. Bush has allowed thousands of his *own people* to be killed, and he's sent thousands more out to die for a lie.

"Can you remind me when Bush advocated the destruction of jews/muslims/blacks or someother race? Bin Laden and Iranian president are openly advocating new holocaust. This is pretty much what Hitler was doing in 1937."

What made Hitler evil or criminal wasn't what he advocated, it's what he did with the power he had. Same with Bush. I'm *not* equating Bush with Hitler, merely pointing out that it's *actions* that matter, not intentions or words or thoughts or desires (something the American Taliban doesn't understand). Of course unjustifiable mass slaughter of Iraqis may not be something Bush would explicitly advocate - but that is just in fact what he has done. (Though we can gain some insight into his sociopathic mindset from that infamous video of him making light of his own inability to find WMD - looking behind the couch in the Oval Office, etc.)
So Bin Laden can advocate all he wants - only in his dreams will he come close to actually causing as much death and destruction as Bush. And of course this Iraq adventure has given the Bin Ladens of the world a great boost as they try to match Bush's terrorist record.

DeeDee is apparently a graduate of the Karl Rove school of diplomacy, bringing public discourse to a new level of bitter partisanship and nastiness. She doesn't discuss; she derides.

Is she in favor of the war? If so, why? She's so busy putting those "wackoes" down she doesn't say.

Personally, I'm against the war because it's counterproductive. A similar outcome could have been achieved using other methods. And I don't like our President because he breaks laws and lies. I see his actions as a threat to the Constitution.

Now I'll just sit back and wait for DeeDee to burst forth and let me know just what she thinks of me.

Bush is more evil than Bin Laden? I don't think so...I am the evil-est one of all! Bua-ha-ha-ha-hahahahahaha.
