TWU Prez Outta Jail Early!

Four days, four nights - that's all the time that Transport Workers Union president Roger Toussiant spent at the Tombs as he was released just now. And why? Good behavior, plus this interesting loophole, via the Daily News:

Inmates automatically get one-third off their sentences for good behavior, bringing his term to seven days.

That would mean a Sunday exit for Toussaint, 49, who entered the Tombs in Manhattan Monday night. But state law also says that inmates with a Sunday release date are to be freed the preceding Friday, the Correction Department said.

Way to work the system, Roger! Now, to figure out how the union will pay those huge fines from the transit strike - oh, and a transit contract. And MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow must be steamed.

Do I sense an anti-union bias from Gothamist?

So much for the martyrdom of Roger Toussaint. 4 days in the pokey? At least it's going to save the TWU money in that they won't have to pay the "protesters" any more.

Are you anti-union? Are you actually supporting Kalikow and his grafting goons?

Damn. He didn't even have a chance to drop the soap.

He should have never gone in the first place. What an ass to send him. Wanna talk about wasting tax dollar?

One can be pro-union or at least neutral and still hate Roger Toussaint.

And lets put this in perspective. This is 2006, not 1900. The MTA employees are making very good salaries for their skill and education level. And they get very good benefits. How many readers here can retire at 55 and get a full pension? How may of you don't pay for health care? From the way Toussaint talked you would think we're in The Jungle.

Unions in general are good, but TWU Local 100 is bad. Roger Toussaint is more Al Sharpton than Mike Quill. Hopefully a stronger version of the Taylor Law will be passed making those responsible really pay.

If you don't think it's fair that you don't get to retire at 55 then join their union. Let's talk about what Kalikow and his goons get from raping the NYC public. Striking is all the leverage a working man has. Thank God they have the benefits and the salary they do.

I've supported the TWU because I'm a unionist from a unionist family, but let's be clear: Roger T. is no Mike Quill. You know why? Quill would never have risked all of this without coming out with a deal. If you're a good politician, if you're a good leader, then no vote should ever be a surprise. The fact that Roger put that contract to a vote and lost tells me everything... that he's more balls than brains.
