Sanids Ozolinsh should give Ed Whitson a call. That might help him prepare to be the most-vilified figure in town. With the Garden rocking and Jagr back in the lineup, Ozolinsh misplayed the puck setting up a 2-on-1 rush that the Devils converted for a goal just 68 seconds into the game last night. The goal sucked the life out of the building and New Jersey went on to win 3-0.
The way things are going for New Jersey, there is a good chance they will hoist their fourth Stanley Cup later this year. They have been flawless defensively while capitalizing on almost every Ranger mistake and turning it into an odd-man rush. Brodeur has once again shown why he is the best goaltender of his generation, stopping 79 of the 81 shots he has faced in this series.
The Rangers now have one more chance to save the way this season is remembered. Losing to New Jersey seems inevitable, but to do so in four games while dropping their last nine overall would really put this franchise back on its heels. Yes, they did some great things, but you cannot finish the season this way. They need to win on Saturday.

Who is Ed Whitson and what did he do? Why is he the most vilified sports athlete to play in New York?
Just a thought, but maybe when you link a player with a backstory, how about linking to the ACTUAL backstory and not just a stats page.
Yeah - Ozolinsh misplayed the puck. I'm sure that's the only reason Jersey won 6-1, 4-1 and 3-0 so far. Let's get some perspective, people. The Rangers were picked to finish dead last in the standings before the season started. They didn't. They made the playoffs. They got hurt and fell into a slump at the worst possible time. But they are young and they will learn and they will be even better next season.
FOOOOOOOOORE!!
i hear Yashin and DiPietro already have a foursome scheduled for Sunday with Jags and Lundquist.
A win on Saturday would be nice, but I do think its a lock for NJ.
Whats up with Lundqvist? seems kind of shaky.. momentum and confidence have SO much to do with the game.
At the game last night it looked to me that a lot of the Rangers were so concerned about making making mistakes that they actually made mistakes.
I agree with section313, they have accomplished quite a bit this year and I will always be chanting LETS GO RANGERS til the final seconds.
That being said... who does a Ranger fan cheer for if they get eliminated? Being from WNY, i'm going for the sabres.
Sorry, Sports Dude, I didn't think Whitson was that obscure. He was a pitcher who came to the Yankees in the mid-80's with a great track record and flopped here. The abuse from the fans became so bad that he eventually was used only on the road to save him from the Yankee Stadium crowd.
He also got in a fight with Billy Martin and broke his arm. I am not sure that hurt him with the crowds though.
Section 313-
Of course it's not the only reason they lost, but look at the abuse the guy took last night. He was booed everytime he touched the puck. Let's face it, Rangers fans are a pretty tough group. If they love you, they will always love you. If they hate you (Potvin) they will ALWAYS hate you. Ozolinsh is going to be run out of town if this keeps up.
I also agree that they far exceeded expectations, but I think they diminish all of the positive momentum they created if they go out 4-0 to the Devils.
Thanks for the clarification Mr. Trinkle. I did a google search and found out the info, pretty funny stuff if I do say so myself.
One last comment, some of us loyal gothamist readers are transplanted sports lovers from other parts of the country who are not schooled in the ed whitsons/potvin (im guessing felix?) new york sports lore. Any extra info is always appreciated.
Their only chance is for Messier to lace em up and "guarantee" 4 straight wins.
From Wikipedia--
"On January 27, 1979, in a game against the rival New York Rangers, Potvin delivered one of his signature hip checks to Rangers center Ulf Nilsson; Nilsson suffered a broken ankle on the play. In response, Rangers fans created the Potvin Sucks! chant which would be traded in exchange with the chant nineteen-forty (1940), for the year of the last Rangers cup before 1994. To this day, almost 20 years after Potvin retired, the "Potvin Sucks!" chant, punctuated by several shrill and derisive whistles, can still be heard at Rangers games."
The chant is stupid, couldn't be more irrelevant, and needs to be stopped.
Before Sather made the trade, I just knew Bozolinsh would have a negative impact on the team. Good to see the guy prove me right in spades.
If Rangers get swept, they buy out his contract in the summer. If management were serious about a rebuild, then members of the Pack get called up. We might not be in contention to win the division next year, but with skilled hardworking youths, it sure won't be boring. If there's a sweep, the Wolf Pack games will be aired. They are a ridiculously well coached team, unlike their big brothers on Broadway.
I like Buffalo it to the Finals.
Sports Dude
Thanks for the feedback, I will keep that in mind for the future and it's Dennis Potvin, the former Islander Captain and Enemy #1 of Rangers' fans everywhere. I don't think the chant will ever stop, but I am glad the "beat your wife Potvin" chant is gone.

Just for the record, Kwanito - the Wolf Pack has the same kind of meltdown last year as they headed into the playoffs as the Rangers did this season (I know - I went to Hartford to get my hockey fix on occasion). I agree with you about bringing up some more boys fromt the Pack - this was supposed to be a 'rebuilding' year as well, but they played out of their heads and we got lucky.
