Video of the Day: Subway!

Holy cow: Kottke spotted this amazing muppets video about the subway from the early 1970s. Does anyone have the lyrics? [Related: YouTube has about 100 of these old clips-- find your favorites.]

Man...old school Sesame Street ruled. Unfortunately, I was watching the show right when Elmo-mania started. I wish they would show the vintage 1969 and 1970's episodes again on Noggin.

Has anyone seen the video with Stevie Wonder? They were jamming on Sesame Street, man! You'd never see something like that now.

This is brilliant! Mad props for finding this.

the one i always sing is the Beatles spoof, "Hey, Food" sung to the tune of "Hey Jude" by actual little beetle muppets.

#8: You mean the sequence with the car that's giving a weak "rrrrrr" sound until the lady steps out, removes a letter "R" from the trunk, pops it into the hood and revs up the engine? Another classic!

p.s. The "12345....678910...11 12" can also be found on YouTube, I spent a good hour & a half on there yesterday reliving my childhood (and re-learning the alphabet).

  • I'm a little disturbed by the "or you might lose something worse!" line. Ahhh, the 70's NYC.

how funny! watch lil' shorty ( pink lil boy with bewildered expresion!) bust a spin on um, like: " move! i got this! Hi- Larious!!! Peep how he gets winded... and steps to the side!! MAn, I got a googd chuckle off that one. Does anyway have the pinball cartoon thats real jazzy? or the sistah with the VW bug clip? Im looking for a mp3 or the clip itself.

Classic! ... And poor Bert with nobody to dance with.

  • "Subway" is clearly a takeoff, both lyrically and melodically, of a popular song of the time. Can anyone name it?

  • Here's an mp3 file of At the Bus Stop and here are the lyrics.

im haunted by the other mass transit song: BUS STOP! "meet me at the buss stop, down on the corner, we'll have a good time"

ok, taking the bus isnt that cool, but that song sure was!

  • Lyrics can be found here.

Are you kidding?? Not only do I remember it, sometimes I catch myself playing the song in my head when I'm about to go down the stairs into the station!

p.s. "Ealry"? Please, no typos when we're discussing one of the best children's educational shows EVER. ;)

  • My god, I must have seen that 30 years ago (and still remember it)!

And people wonder why so many of the NYC transplants are 70s kids? Blame Sesame Street for making it so appealing to young minds. :)
