Wow - three manholes exploded dramatically yesterday afternoon. Flames shot up from manholes between East 69th Street and Second Avenue and East 70th and Third Avenue, causing traffic diversions. Luckily, no one was hurt - just totally spooked, thinking that hell was indeed underground. According to Con Ed, manholes explode when the wires' insulation overheats. Yeesh - we wonder if the manhole covers flipped up or if flames were the main problem. At any rate, Con Ed and the FDNY had to check buildings for carbon monoxide (none had alarming levels).
Check out the How Stuff Works explanation on exploding manholes - has anyone seen if Con Ed is moving towards the slotted manhole covers (they "allow the gas to be released less violently, and also give an early warning to possible explosions") - and our readers' thoughts on some manhole explosions two years ago.

Blame it on those blasted Folger's promotions.
I had a similar incident happen to several manhole covers in front of my building on Austin St. in Forest Hills, Queens about 2 years ago. The explosion was big enough to be felt inside my apartment on the 6th floor. I ran downstairs a few minutes later to see thick black smoke pouring out of two manholes and found one manhole cover about 30 feet away laying on the street. I believe the FDNY gave the same reason for this happening as the most recent manhole explosion.
Clearly, the Key Master has met with the Gatekeeper and we are witnessing the return of Gozer the Gozerian.
Soon we'll see human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together - mass hysteria!
We had to evacuate the gym last Friday evening because a manhole cover exploded at the corner of 63rd and Lexington. Luckily no one was hurt but traffic was definitely slowed down because of it.Oddly enough this incident never got reported in the papers or on the news.
C.H.U.D. you beat me to it.
I scoured the city today to bring you a photo of a vented ConEd manhole cover. Okl I just happened upon it today.
