A Taste of Christina's Restaurant in Greenpoint

Despite the fact that we live in Greenpoint, Gothamist never quite got around to trying out the Polish fare in the area. After reading about Joe's trip to Lomzynianka last month, we knew that it was time to take the plunge. Lucky for us, some of our friends were craving some Polish food over the weekend (because it's always better to eat with other people). They had heard good things about Christina's Restaurant, so that's where we headed. We can't say we were disappointed. The food was reasonably priced, but the service seemed a bit slow and they seemed to have James Blunt's CD on repeat. On the plus side (or not) they have a nice little wall waterfall and waitresses that dress in similar skimpy outfits.

More pictures from Christina's at Tien's site and the full menu at Bridge and Tunnel Club. Pictured above is the fried kielbasa and the pierogis with red borscht. In the extended entry is a picture of a fruit blintz as well as a small section of their menu. Want pig knuckles? No problem.

Where do you like to go for your Polish fix?

I go to this place fairly often. The service is always slow, but the food is dirt cheap and the waitresses' skirts are very, very short. Sit at the counter for slight faster service and a great view.

I can't track it down, but since you mention this today, I read yesterday that Lech Walesa is appearing in Greenpoint today at a new bank opening. Yes, that Lech Walesa. And it probably happened this morning.

Is that a sausage or a severed penis?

Sometimes, a polish kielbasa is just a polish kielbasa.

ack, those photos are bad

there appear to be about 30-some lines of text on that menu, and you managed to get about three in focus.

same goes for the tiny percentage of fruit on that plate.

Those pictures are 3000% unappealing.

Gross.

um, you do understand that i was only trying to get a few lines of the menu in focus, right?

and sorry that you don't like the quality of the photos, but when you go out to eat, it's not like you control the lighting. and i don't tend to carry a tripod around.

Actually the Photos are great.

The food on the other hand...

kojak, you should know that i played with my food an positioned it in various other positions after that first picture.

I look forward to an even longer weekend wait. I'm not a brunch kind of gal anyway, so I guess I'll stick to weekdays.

I am just glad you got the pig knuckles for $5.25 in focus. MMMMMMMM.....

Pretty photos! Just prefer them as subject matter rather then in my tummy. Can't eat that stuff.
Who knows though, maybe I just have "sausage envy."
:)
More penis jokes, please.

exactly, peter. that was my goal. to have that item in focus and everything else blurred.

I grew up on midwestern Polish-American fair. I lived in Greenpoint for a few months when I moved to the city and took the opportunity to sample the food at many places. Christina's was better than most; I never made it to Baron's ... but overall, I have to say I was seriously disappointed, especially in the pierogi. The Polish food in Chicago, Milwaukee and Hamtramck (in Detroit, where my mom's side of the family landed when they came to the US) is vastly superior to anything I've found in NYC so far. Any other Greenpoint recommendations? I'm particularly curious to know if any Polish restaurants have pierogi with the sweetened farmers cheese or particularly good mushroom & kraut filling (and better dough, to boot)...

i'm not sure of restaurants but in the c-town on graham they have packaged pierogies that are made somewhere down the street. (google tells me it's at 438 Graham). haven't seen anything with kraut but they have a few good varieties: cheddar & potato, russian (which i think is made with the farmers cheese), mushroom, etc. a friend mentioned she'd seen them in top's on n6th as well.

Got to agree with Scott. The Polish food I ate in Buffalo growing up (and have since had in Chicago) is so much better than what I've had in NYC. And I can't seem to find a good kraut filled pierogi or fresh keilbasa...
