Photo of the Day: Subway Tunnel Exploration

2006_4_2ndave1.jpg

Sean from NYC Exposed sent in a link to this gallery of subway tunnel shots-- along with a note: "I revisited 2nd ave." Could this be the fabled section of the Second Avenue line that actually got built? If anyone is going to get down there, it's NYC Exposed-- they've got one of the best collections of subway/tunnel pictures we've seen so far.

Related: Curbed notes that Property Shark has added the Second Avenue subway line to its maps-- seems a bit early for that! Cityspecific goes up to 191st Street on the 1 Train, and checks out the three block long tunnel that connects the station to Broadway. Spooky!

  • That is the 63rd Street line, which will be used by the Q train to get to Second Avenue.
  • OMG 14-year-olds NOOOOO!

  • Anyone interested in Urban Exploration should check out www.undercity.org. Steve Duncan has explored a significant amount of the city's tunnel and hidden infrastructure. Great photography, too.

  • Ooooo!

  • Think twice

Property Shark is soooooooooooooooo jumping the gun.

The running joke is that by the time the SAS is done we'll all be teleporting.

  • JR

That's not the Second Avenue subway, it's the 63rd Street connector. The SAS portions were never outfitted with rails, and sure as hell don't have working signals!

The SAS portions would also look quite a bit more run-down since they've been sealed off for 30 years...

  • HowamIDoin'

Scammed. That's a photo of the 63rd street tunnel, not second ave.

    ****************************************************************

More than one section of the 2nd Ave. Line got built:

The sections actually finished (completed tunnel, no track) are from the Bowery to Chrystie Street, East 2nd to East 9th Streets (filled back in), East 99th to East 105th Streets, and East 110th to East 120th Streets . . .

  • secreteights

sorry I meant "wasn't too safe"...

  • secreteights

Having grown up off the 191st station, that tunnel was a haven for us teens looking for a hideaway, esp when cold. Of course it was too safe for others ie the yuppie folk that lived in Inwood. Ah the good old days...

  • n

That site is run by a 14 year old.

  • I heard that they dug some stations for the S.A.S. back in the 70's (one of them is under Confuscious Place in Chatham Square) but did not connect them with tunnels or lay tracks. Have they built a stretch of tunnel in the last couple years?

  • me, him, her

Anybody know how to get down there? Or into the croton aquaducts?
