Manhole + Advertising = Brilliant?

2006_04_folgers.jpg

Here's something Gothamist has never seen in New York before - advertising on manhole covers. Via coloribus, it seems like Saatchi & Saatchi is doing some guerilla advertising for Folgers coffee. We must say that it's a brilliant use of manholes who, before this, were best used for tattoos. And while it's original, Gothamist doesn't think "mmm...coffee" when we smell some of the steam coming out of manholes. Next up for marketers, printing a vinyl cover with lots of dog poo on it. "Take a whiff, New York. A steaming pile of poo."

Has anyone actually seen this yet? From the looks of it, it's right at 7th Ave and Bleecker in front of Caliente Cab.

If they didn't get authorization from the city, fine them back into the stone age!

I am tired of ads everywhere. It will eventually lead to a backlash and bite these damn ad agencies in their proverbial arses.

I like those holes for the steam to come out of, but until they can add a better smell, this is a not so good idea. But it was probably great as a concept.

7th & Bleecker my arse. It's definitely located squarely at c:\mydocuments\manhole.jpg.

That's photoshop if I've ever seen it.

The ad in front of Caliente Cab should say "Never eat at Caliente Cab"

blech is right. This is so photoshopped; what little faith I've ever had in Gothamist's "reporting" continue to leak away.

FUN GUERILLA MASHUP!

ermmm obviously photoshopped. come on man.

Maybe they could add some coffee grounds in a heavy-duty filter to the underside of the manhole. The steam would have to rise through the coffee to exit the exhaust holes thereby improving the smell of the steam while creating a new category of marketing: Odortising.

i was gonna say...how exactly did they rig that ad? it's photoshop. and just the kinda thing in your portfolio that would get you the job. a classic case of advertisers jerking off. i should know. i'm one.

Reminds me of the streaming hole at the Virgin Store next to Union Square. Never understood that one.

Maybe instead of photoshopping in coffee, they should put a big steaming anus there with some hemorrhoidal cream.

Ads everywhere sucks but what also sucks is seeing people just posting images they don't have the rights to...this particular image as made the rounds at nearly every ad blog out there.

...and is it real or just a photoshop job? Who knows? Who cares?
Actually I do - so like tien mao, I too wonder if anyone has actually seen this for real yet. Perhaps you could ask whomever gave you the shot?

I found this one this past winter in Columbus Circle:

It's real. Not photoshopped. It's a concept by Saatchi & Saatchi.

The picture is good :-)
