It's No Panda Express Joke
Some people were upset by the NY Post's "Wok This Way" cover headline, which showed Chinese leader Hu Jintao with President Bush, who was pulling at Hu's jacket. The Daily News, who is keeping score on any possible missteps by its rival, reports that Asian American groups are upset. For instance, Margaret Fung, executive director of the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, tells the News, "It was racist and offensive because it takes the president of China and connects him to the stereotype of a cook in a Chinese restaurant." True; relative to the News' "Boo Hu" headline, (which makes sense, since China was upset with the heckler, and was a little less...dicey), the Post was asking for complaints. But at least the Post didn't try a "No Tickey, No Washy" headline! Seriously speaking, the Post will do anything to make President Bush look good, so this headline comes as no surprise, although it is the exact same headline used for a 2001 Post story about Pearl River, which actually sells woks so no controversy there.

Bush looks like George Costanza trying to get a feel for Hu's fabric. I forget the premise of that episode. I actually credit the Post for not using a drycleaner joke here; it wouldn't be beyond them.
when i was a kid my classmates used to ask me if i could speak in china. for a while i'd say "ya it's easy, buy me a ticket." but then i decided to start explaining to them that: 1. the language is "chinese"; 2. my parents are korean; and 3. korea and china are different.
but don't just take my word for it!

At the very least, it's ignorant. I'm not sure if Hu speaks Cantonese, but he does speak Mandarin. In which case the headline should be something like "Guo over here." That said, the Chinese government are bigger crooks and murderers than our own--no insult could possibly be to harsh.
