Queensboro Bridge Death

2006_04_qnsbridge.jpgBad early morning traffic accident: A driver headed to the Queensboro Bridge was thrown to his death. According to WABC 7, the driver was "taking a sharp curve on the entrance ramp" to the Bridge in LIC, when it crashed in the left wall around 4AM; he was "thrown 30 feet to the parking lot of the Silvercup Studios at 42-22 22nd Street." It's unclear how fast the driver was going, but with roads being clearer that early, people do seem to go much faster.

  • buckle up!

Did you guys notice the man was ejected from the vehicle? The SUV is still on the roadway. Obviously he wasn't wearing his seatbelt!

  • Follow the posted speed limit

Speed limit on the bridge and in Manhattan is 30mph unless otherwise noted. No need for flashing light or signs. He was speeding. Well over 30mph. I've taken those curves (both directions) close to 50mph no problem.

I don't think so...you shouldn't be going that fast anywayz, especially before a turn where you can't see the other end of...

  • It was at 4AM, wonder if the poor guy was drowsing off? Also, Does the 30 Feet mean the Drop?

The photo on the WABC Site looks like the elevated portion and the two sides you see of the car looks undamaged (other side could be completely FU...). If that's the case, he might not have been going all that fast, just enough to clear the wall.

cdjames, good point. the first time i ever took it, the turn comes as a slight surprise...and the long straightaway right before it certainly doesn't help

  • conswayla

SilverCup Studio is where they film the Sopranos. Just to let you know.

40mph? I don't think so. Its a 90 degree turn and should be better signed. A blinking light. Something.

If you take it everyday, you know its coming... if you dont know its coming its trouble [as evidenced by the many paint marks lining the barrier].

I take that bridge all the time...you can go at least 30-40mph on that turn and be in control...the dude must have been going at least 60 to lose control like that and crash...

(its a fun turn to take at high speeds)

  • If he was thrown 30ft, he was likely going at a Fast pace. If it was here than it's a wide 90 Degrees turn.
