Oh, to be a district attorney in NYC! Yesterday, at a rally outside Criminal Court, Sam Waterston voiced his support to get more funding for city DA's. He said, "The real DAs and ADAs deserve a lot of credit and not just for providing us the stories that keep us on the air," according to the Post. Yeah, we remember the episodes where the rich defendants or high profile defense attorneys belittle Jack McCoy's paltry executive assistant DA's salary - that's always a low blow. Anyway, it's smart to have Sam Waterston on your side, as it always seems like he's going to give you the best advice possible - that's probably why TD Waterhouse has now turned him into their spokesman. TD Waterhouse's ad agency says, "We decided he is a valuable, credible spokesman for the idea of independence. In his role on 'Law & Order,' he is the voice of critical, independent thinking." Waterston plays lawyers and dads really well - remember him as D.A Forrest Bedford in I'll Fly Away, the great NBC drama he was on before Law & Order?
Our autographed picture of Sam Waterston

Anyone remember him in the Great Gatsby?! He was Nick Caroway!
I remember him in Hopscotch with Walter Matthau and Ned Beatty.
Good movie...
This is because the ADAs aren't allowed to unionize. The starting salary is less than $45,000 a year. And anyone idealistic enough to work for the government doesn't have rich parents that paid for law school - unless you're working in the DAs office as a resume padding exercise e.g. JFK Jr.
Sam Waterson's Nick Caroway was like my ultimate literary wet dream. :x
My favorite Waterston role is really a very small one that he played in an episode of Tales from the Crypt with hector Eliozondo. He played a private detective so sleazy it was hard to believe it was Sam Waterston. Unshaven, unkempt, sloppy, alcoholic, menacing and evil. It was a hoot!
so jealous
He was at several awards/graduation ceremonies when I was graduating (he must have had a kid in my year). Anyway, my dad got so excited. He was all, "I sat next to Sam Waterston!" It was really cute.
He does have amazing credibility.
Forgive me if I don't feel sorry for the DAs in this city.
The public defenders get paid even less than the DAs and have heavier workload responsilities. No matter what that classic little Law and Order opening says about the People being represented by 2 two separate yet equally important groups (or whatever it is), the average person is represented by a court-appointed public defender. I think NYC would be a better place if we were adequately compensating the people who actually represent the People.
oops I meant "responsibilities"...
SAm Waterston was the only good thing about Heaven's Gate. He played such a great bad guy...I remember, not long after I saw this movie, I saw Rancho Deluxe. Not a great movie either, but you have to remember the budget was probably what Cimino got for one day's lunch on Heaven's Gate. In this movie, SW played one of the funniest characters...I wonder why he never plays dastardly villians, or broad comedic roles anymore? I wonder why he's never hosted SNL? Hmmmm....life's big questions....
I ran into Sam Waterson at Zen Palate last month and recognized him but wasn't going to say anything. I was trying to get started on my spring break Don Quixote assignment, and he commented that I had a lot of reading to do, but that Don Quixote was a really fun, quick read. He was so nice!
I was just watching Woody Allen's "Crimes and Misdemeanors" (i.e. the superior version of "Match Point"), and it features not only Sam Waterston but also Jerry Orbach. Casting director Juliet Taylor should get a commission from Dick Wolf!
He was in the classic 1978 film Capricorn One, which was about a faked mission to Mars. I remember staying up to watch it on the Channel 7 late movie once. The cast was intresting as it included Elliott Gould, James Brolin, O.J. Simpson, Hal Holbrook, Karen Black, Telly Savalas.
Dare I mention his gig pimping for Old Glory Robot Insurance?
