Because Mayor Bloomberg is mingling with flowers, bees and other woodland sprites that made their way to Union Square! New York City is celebrating National Gardening Month with a number of events, including an Earth Day shebang in Central Park (featuring planting projects, walking tours, and entertainment at the Naumberg Bandshell) on Saturday, art exhibits at the Arsenal in Central Park, and an all-day garden festival in Union Square on Saturday, April 29 with cooking demonstrations, gardening tips and plants for sale. Too bad it's supposed to be rainy this weekend - enjoy today while you can.
And from the Department of Sanitation, you can recycle your electronic equipment this Sunday by dropping it off (limit of five items) at the North Plaza of Union Square between 9AM and 3PM. You can bring TVs, computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cell phones. (We've been finding New York magazine's Spring Cleaning Guide inspiring, but daunting!)

Maybe the Bloomie admin can spend a few pennies and plant (and maintain) some trees along the many barren avenues and streets of Manhattan? Those small street segments of Manhattan that have only a few mature trees (e.g. - Madison Ave. in the upper 30's, Lafayette Street where Bike Habitat is located) are noticeably more pleasant and help to break up the concrete grid.
And we'll know it's summer when the mayor jumps into an outer-borough swimming pool with lifeguard whistle and shirt on. The Four Seasons of Mike Bloomberg.
Bloomberg looks either incredibly uncomfortable or constipated or some combination of the two in that photo.
