Woodside Graffiti Taggers Arrested
We're pretty sure that City Councilman Peter Vallone has a rolodex of statements ready to give whenever there's a graffiti arrest in Queens, but this is the first time Gothamist has heard Queens DA Richard Brown weigh in on graf. With the arrests of two men for "criminal mischief and making graffiti", Brown said, "City officials and anti-graffiti activists have done a remarkable job over the years in cleaning up New York City's image as a graffiti-scarred city. We cannot allow vandals to mar the beauty of our city and return us to the days when our transit system and our highways and buildings were covered with graffiti." According to AM New York, Peter Korolis used the tag Kaspo and may face up to 4 years in jail while Kevin Varela, who tagged under "Toon 84" (his stuff can be seen in Queens and Brooklyn), faces up to 1 year.
The NYPD's Anti-Graffiti Task Force.

What do they think, once they "tag" something, they OWN it? You need money to own stuff. Stop tagging shit, you ghetto bitches. You are never going to "own" anything.
Finally, our tax dollars at work.
Being in Queens: I'm tired of some Jackass spray painting store fronts and making our neighborhoods look like crap.
Forgot to note: they don't stop at Store Fronts. There are plenty of fences, schools, and houses "Tagged" too.
good. enjoy jail, boys.
I agree. I'm glad they caught these guys and hope they spend the next 20 years in jail and "drop the soap".
There is no question, grafitti should be a capital offense.
20 years in jail? Put down the New York Post and walk away slowly. Wow, this is what people get worked up about when the crime is low, right? I'm no fan of graffiti, but for god's sake I'd rather have cops hunting down murderers, drug dealers, and terrorists than giving parking tickets, nabbing vandals or fining women who feed pigeons.
HEY WTF:
When you reduce "Quality of Life" crimes, such as grafitti, more heinous crimes such as murder go down.
People take pride in their neighborhood and are more likely to improve the neighborhood when crimes like grafitti are eliminated.
I'd like to welcome our guest economists - WTF and Mickster. Great use of data and facts guys. You fricking tools.
Tagging is like SPAM..granted some graffiti can have great design but most of it is garbage...I am sick of people ruining the neighborhood and taggin on houses, sidewalks, and trees..
I don't know if jail should be the punishment..perhaps some paint thinner, rubber gloves and a scrub-brush for them to clean it up is a cheaper solution..
I don't know about that so called task force..I haven't seen them clean up anything in BX yet..
Why is Jen posting this? Doesn't Jake usually post graf stories with glee and praise?
I'm confused as to why this is news? If the task force is doing so good, shouldn't we be hearing about arrests all the time? The worst part is that these two guys are complete toys and now they get all this free fame because AMNY had a slow news day.
I am generally pro graffiti, but this is really bad graffiti. Maybe their sentence should be lessons from whoever did the fill in on the roll-up gate.
graffiti makes me heart NY
Hey a: why don't you read the NYPD and FBI reports on the subject of quality of life crimes instead
of insulting people?
Apparently you didn't live in NYC in the 80's or early 90's...
From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory
The theory in action
The book's author, George L. Kelling, was hired as a consultant to the New York Transit Authority in 1984, and robust measures to test the Broken Windows theory were implemented by David Gunn. Graffiti vandalism was intensively targeted, and the system was cleaned line by line and car by car from 1984 until 1990. Kelling has also been hired as a consultant to the LAPD and to the Boston Police Department.
In 1990 William J. Bratton became head of the Transit Police. Bratton described George L. Kelling as his "intellectual mentor", and implemented 'zero tolerance' of fare-dodging, easier arrestee processing methods and background checks on all those arrested. Republican Mayor Giuliani also adopted the strategy more widely in New York City, from his election in 1993, under the rubrics of 'zero tolerance' and 'quality of life'.
Under Giuliani, Bratton was later appointed head of the New York Police Department. A new tax surcharge enabled the training and deployment of around 5,000 new better-educated police officers, police decision-making was devolved to precinct level, and a backlog of 50,000 unserved warrants was cleared. The CompStat real-time police intelligence computer system was effectively introduced and integrated into police working. Police numbers were further boosted in 1995 when the New York's housing and transit police were merged into the New York Police Department.
Thus, Giuliani's "zero tolerance" rollout was part of an interlocking set of wider reforms, crucial parts of which had been underway since 1984. Giuliani had the police even more strictly enforce the law against subway fare evasion, and stopped public drinkers, urinators, and the "squeegee men" who had been wiping windshields of stopped cars and demanding payment. Rates of both petty and serious crime fell suddenly and significantly, and continued to drop for the following ten years (see: the 2001 study of crime trends in New York by George Kelling and William Sousa, and the 2002 study by Hope Corman).
