The Pulitzer Prizes were announced today and the old Gray Lady takes three, but the Washington Post won four (criticism, beat reporting, explanatory writing, and investigative reporting). However, the real story might be the awards for Hurricane Katrina coverage, a public service award shared by the Sun-Herald in Biloxi and the Times-Picayune in New Orleans, breaking news photography award for the Dallas Morning News and a breaking news reporting awards fro the Times-Picayune.
The three Pulitzers the NY times won are for international reporting on "ragged justice in China", commentary by Nicholas D. Kristof, and national reporting on domestic eavesdropping (this prize was shared with the San Diego Tribune's coverage of Randy Cunningham's bribe-taking). And youch, no Pulitzer was awarded for Drama - though there were three nominees.

Does anyone understand why no award for drama was given out? That seems unusual.
Because the three finalists sucked, that's why.
I agree with teetime. I saw Miss Witherspoon and Red Light Winter and although I didn't hate them, they just didn't scream "Pulitzer Prize Winning Play". And the description of the third one is just plain dumb.
the blue and white (columbia's undergraduate magazine) has a little piece on the ceremony today. www.bwog.net
I'm glad the Times-Picayune was recognized. They did an amazing job during and in the aftermath of Katrina. They put us right there with the people of New Orleans and I feel like I understood what was really happening so much better for it. It's what reporting should be - not this sensational crap you see in papers like the NY Post every day where contests are just as important as human tragedy and take up half the front page.
