Juniper Tree to New York City: F-U!

Is anyone else in allergy hell this week? Here at Gothamist HQ, our eyes are so puffy we can barely make out these words as we type! Our sneezes have taken on the quality of machine-gun fire, and our cat has become so fed up with our constant accusations of being responsible for the misery that he's fled for friendlier environs (the kitchen.) Thankfully, all of this stuff isn't just in our heads. Newsday reports:

In its 2006 Spring Allergy Capital rankings, the AAFA ranks New York City as the 11th worst place to live for allergy sufferers. Last year, the city ranked 88th.

"The Northeast is catching up rapidly to the South, which is traditionally the allergy capital," said Dr. Wellington S. Tichenor, an allergy and asthma specialist who practices in Manhattan and runs www.sinuses.com. "Typically, the more intense the winter is, the less intense the allergies are going to be, and we've been having some fairly mild winters."

Our antidote? Constant douching with nasal saline sprays, hourly Afrin snorting, and honest prayer. Any other suggestions for allergy remedies?

Save a lot of money by getting Duane Reade "Nasal Relief" spray instead, which has *exactly the same ingredients* as Afrin.

I made a happy discovery while on the south beach diet: removing most of the sugars from my diet pretty much cured my allergies. I've heard the same about cutting down on dairy.

I highly recommend taking an allergy pill before you go to sleep. This truly helps get you off on the right foot in the morning. Also, agree about eliminating sugars; has helped me a lot so far this year.

I am going to the doctor today - this is misery. I never had an allergy until my 30s. What gives? I always think it's a cold, too. I have been sneezing non-stop.

Gothamist HQ? word.
where is dat? Tribeca?

If you'd rather not dope yourself up, one of the best things that has helped me is keeping hydrated. Drink a ton of water, at least 12 glasses a day, and it helps tremendously.

Also, there was an article recently about increasing your Vitamin B-12 uptake to 5-6 mgs. Cheaper than Allegra and healthier too.

eat an avocado.....works like a charm for one mystical reason or another.

Another folk remedy - eat local honey. I'm not sure exactly how it works but it has something to do with the pollen from the local flowers in the honey making your immune system adjust to it. Of course I don't know how easy it is for most folks to find local honey in NYC - I'm lucky enough to have a neighbor across the street who keeps bees on his roof (yes, this is unfortunately illegal in NYC so I am not disclosing the location).

a bit of spring cleaning, maybe? ;)
