Queen Mary Arrives in Red Hook

2006_4_nyqm1.JPG

Amy from Newyorkology woke up at 5am to get the money-shot of the Queen Mary 2 arriving at the Brooklyn Cruise Ship Terminal. She reports:

The ship arrived at its new New York home port around 5 a.m. and tour buses could be seen streaming into the gated terminal area. The streets in the surrounding industrial neighborhood had been cleaned of trash and at least one heavily-potholed street showed off a quick-and-dirty repaving job. Police officers stood in groups on most corners near the terminal, directing people toward the ends of Sullivan and Wolcott streets to catch a glimpse of the massive ship in port.

We'll be going down there later on an afternoon bike ride-- but if you're too lazy to hike out to Red Hook, Amy says you can catch a glimpse of the ship departing at 5pm from Battery Park or the Staten Island Ferry. [Related: we really enjoyed Amy's guide to Red Hook for all the cruise ship passengers heading out that way-- although we're doubtful too many of them will be stopping off at Hope & Anchor for beers.]

UPDATE: the AP's Bebeto Matthews got this great overhead shot of the QM2 coming in to port. You get a sense of the massive scale of the ship from this angle-- that sucker is huge!

Beautiful ghostly ship photo! I can hear foghorns, faraway clanging bells! This picture is almost speaking...with a rough Cockney accent to boot.

  • That 1st photo is Perfect.

Countdown until "new" residents of Red Hook complain that their once quiet little neighborhood is being overrun by yuppies and tourists invading 'their' neighborhood??
