6 Month Sentence in Co-eds' Overdose Deaths

One of the men partying with two 18 year old girls who overdosed was sentenced to 6 months in jail - sparking outrage from family members of the victims. Mellie Carballo and Maria Pesantez had been hanging out with two older men - one being Alfredo Morales, who had had a prior arrest for drug possession - when they died from overdosing on speedballs last August. (Originally, it was suspected the speedballs were tainted, which led to a city-wide fear that killer heroin was to blame.) Morales admitted to unlawfully giving the girls cocaine, which brings a lighter sentence than selling drugs. His lawyer said that the deaths "took a heavy toll on him emotionally." Morales' friend, Roberto Martinez, whose apartment is where the girls overdosed, was only given a parole violation.

You would think that, at some point, we can drop this archaic term "coed". Women have been going to school with men for awhile now, so I think it's safe to simply call them students.

ah, a happy ending- for all parties involved.

Only 6 months for for "unlawfully giving the girls cocaine"? Parole violation?
Yet another victory for liberal activist judges and far-left. 2 girls are dead!

30 years in prison would sound about right.

6 months sounds bout right.
That's what they give DWI automobile drivers when they hit and kill someone.

Seems like unintentional homicide to me. What would Manslaughter have gotten??

They wanted to party and do some so called "harmless" drugs..they paid the price..sad they had to pay with their life but what do you expect? you wanna play with a loaded gun go ahead..

nobody put a gun to their head and made them shoot up..they made that choice..

if all drugs had a immediate death sentence attached maybe then there would be no supply and demand..

Rt,

Don't try and put this off on "liberal activist judges" and "the far left". You got Rush Limbaugh's hand so far up your behind I don't know where he ends and you begin.

Now as a progressive liberal I feel that six months is an outrage. While these girls engaged in reckless behavior that ultimatley ended up costing them their lives, the man who slipped them these drugs is just as much at fault. He poisoned them.

30 years does sound about right.

My friend, an Ivy League educated NYer, a formerly very productive member of society, a man who donated much of his time to charity, sits in a Federal Prison for 2 1/2 years because 2 people dealt drugs in a club he owned (one he was aware of, one that wasn't)...

This guy kills two people and gets 6 months. He's never done anything positive for society.

Show me the justice....

Not sure about the facts of your friend's case, but it's possible that quantity had something to do with it, along with aiding in the sale of narcotics. These folks in the NYU case appeared to have been partying together which allows for a different penalty (possibly.)

Then again, not sure if your friend refused to give names in a larger sting operation. Sounds like he was in the middle of something that the Feds organized, which means that there had to be a message sent.

Not saying his penatly was just, but not saying that the 6 month penalty was unjust.

It is also possible that the dude is an informant or will soon be for the PD.
