Intense Feline Search and Rescue

2006_04_nypdcat.jpgThe plight of Molly, the Myers of Keswick cat trapped in a wall, has captured the city's heart - or at least a few of its news station news trucks. The latest: The cat, who hasn't been seen in two weeks ever since disappearing into the Hudson Street structure, was seen by the NYPD's camera, but refused to come out. So Animal Care and Control set a "humane trap," in hopes Molly's hunger will draw her to it. ACC's field director Mike Pastore says, "We can put a man on the moon, but there's a cat that seems to be about four or five feet away. We got to pull this one off." Which is totally what Gothamist was thinking, because we've totally seen that Seinfeld. Maybe we can get Detective Fred, the undercover cat, working on this?

The trapped cat has brought out a show of camraderie from neighbors - a nearby restaurateur brought over a fish for Molly and school children left letters for her (their teachers probably didn't tell them cats can't read...most of the time). And other rescue workers have been chiseling away at the building; the Landmarks group stopped by to make sure everything was above board, as it is a landmark district. Quick - someone make a movie of this!

My tax dollars at work! Trying to find a fucking cat!

Agree, this is getting way out of proportion! How many cats get trapped in trees or become roadkill every single day, so what makes this one so special?!

If the cat is able to be coaxed out by food, then it's NOT trapped. It will come out eventually when she's hungry enough. Cats are resilient animals, they can take care of themselves just fine. Enough wasting NYPD money and time on this situation.

ahh if it was your cat, you guys would thing differently

This is why I only have goldfish.

Aren't these complainers the same ones that wanted the coyote caught? Since a cat can't eat your toddler, you're not concerned about it?

I hope Molly makes it out ok.

Two different issues here, one involves a wild animal that wandered into the city and might be rabid. Animal control is used appropriately in this case, for the animal's own good as well as the safety of the public.

This is a cat allegedly trapped in a wall, the urgency here is much lower. I am just annoyed at the attention and the waste of resources on a simple matter. I think all the people, noise and attention are probably making Molly more reluctant to come out.

I do wish the cat gets out okay, but this should teach her not to crawl into walls.

Almost every comments thread I read these days has someone who says "you people who think X also think Y!" It's a bad argument - how do YOU know they think Y?

I don't know why I'm wasting this critique on a cat thread, but there it is.

Maybe Toonces can crash through the wall to save his friend..mew mew mew lol!

Bunch of guys working to get some pussy. Just another day in the city.

Fuck off!
Have some compassion - this is someone's beloved pet & it's weak and terrified! Damnit. Be sure to kick some puppies on your way to work while going about your soul-sucking life.
P.S. Homeopt, you're funny at least.
In lieu of assholes, keep fighting for pussy!

I guess one can't post a comment here without getting his/her head bitten off by some raving PETA lunatic.

I never said I want anything bad to happen to Molly, just peeved at the level of resources, effort and attention given to a simple, everyday situation.

Just for your comment, I WILL go kick a puppy tonight on my way home, I hope it's YOUR puppy, you moron.

Gee, can't a raving PETA lunatic moron promote some compassion around here without having her head bitten off by a proud puppy kicker?
:)
Yeah. You don't want anything bad to happen to the cat but since so many cats 'become roadkill everyday, what makes this one so special, right?'
Just remember that people are 'resilient animals' who can also take care of themselves, but we all need a little help or even a rescue sometimes.
Done biting your head off, done raving. No further comment.
But be sure to comment back now instead of working on developing that heart you're lacking.
I'll get back to caring about animals as much as people, why don't YOU express your anger at the NYPD in a nice, well-written letter to them.

I see it's no use having a cordial and reasonable discussion here, and since I am done kicking my puppies today, will be signing off from this thread.

Have a great life when you've become the crazy cat throwing old hag from the Simpsons, La Leone.

Let's call 311 and have the city bill La Leone for the "rescue".

That's right, Republican a*holes - let's only measure the value of life in dollars and cents. You're disgusting.

How do their opinions on a cat rescue make them Republicans? You're such an idiot!

Frankly too many leftist "Democrats" commenting on Gothamist anyway, need to balance them out with some flag hugging, patriotic good ole boys.

I'm no psychic but pulling the PETA reference seems to be a favorite of the right leaning crowd.
Same with "tree hugging" "PC" etc.
The term PC was invented by the right and it's their mantra.
I enjoy a punt kick to a puppy once in a while too.
But some good ole boys won't allow that, they value their dog more than people.

What a colossal waste of time and money.

Have they tried smoking it out from the cigar smoke next door in Hudson Bar and books?
I walked by a Davidoff's and you usually don't smell anything from the lounge but this time I did. Then I read that the lounge was closed due to ventilation cleaning.

How many NYPD, FDNY, Animal Control workers are there wasting time on this? Now it's going to be time & 1/2 for overtime work. Let's conservatively say it's 10 people. This fucking cat is going to cost the city at least $10,000. Someone has to patch up the brickwork too. God forbid they find asbestos or lead paint!

Don't know what it is, but somehow, I get the impression you're a cat-hater. So tell me, how can you be so absolutely certain these workers are on overtime? Do you have some inside information that they're staying there any longer than they have to? And if they're not, how is it costing the city more to have them there rather than to have them sitting at a desk? Are any maimed and injured children being neglected while they "waste" their effort on the cat? I think more than a few people might say you are a waste of time and money.

user-pic

I really doubt these cops and ACC people are getting overtime. If there was something else for them to do, i'm sure they'd go do that instead. Not all cops are busy all the time. I see these cops in the precinct near my apt just standing around chatting for hours. Now THAT'S a waste of your tax dollars but that's a discussion on unions not cats.
