Flight 93 Recording Played

2006_04_flight93recorder.jpgThe cockpit recording from United Flight 93 on September 11 was played in the courtroom of Zacarias Moussaoui's death penalty trial. The 31 minute tape details, as the Daily News puts it, "the charge toward the cockpit, yelps of pain, groans, crashing sounds and the panic of the hijackers as the Americans tried to shove their way in," as well as hijackers yelling "Sit down!" and someone saying, "I don't want to die." The hijackers also repeatedly said, "In the name of Allah. I bear witness that there is no other God but Allah," (the NY Times says Moussaoui smiled "broadly" when that was played). The prosecution rested, and the defense will attempt to show the jury that Moussaoui does not deserve the death penalty, the strategy being to show that he was actually a fringe member of Al Qaeda and that he's mentally ill, deluding himself into thinking he's a mastermind of the plot.

Only the transcript (read it here at The Smoking Gun) was released; Judge Leonie Brinkema refused to release the recording, after victims' families objected. At any rate, the transcript itself is pretty harrowing.

What ever happened to the black box recorders from the 3 other planes on 9/11? I mean, they supposedly found a passport of one of the hijackers totally intact near WTC, but no black boxes?

"What ever happened to the black box recorders from the 3 other planes on 9/11? "

Those probably melted in the intense fire or were crushed under a hundreds of thousands of tons of steel. They are tough but not indestructible. Even if found the recordings were probably damaged beyond repair.

I'm still waiting for the rebuttal of the crackpot theorists who claim that flight 93 was shot down. To those people, it seems that heroism of the type shown on that flight is too disturbibg. Their frist instinct is to believe the worst of our country and people.

I suggest that anyone curious about the anamolies surrounding the events of 9/11 take a look at this. I wonder why the defense team never tried to raise these questions when trying their best to defend their client.

" I wonder why the defense team never tried to raise these questions when trying their best to defend their client."

Because they would be laughed out of court, reprimanded by the judge or get the jury to hate their client even more (if that's possible).

Just move to France already Alex and enjoy the socialism you so richly deserve.

If they lied about WMD and Iraq, why would you believe them about 9/11?

Obviously it's not OK to question the government about 9/11 because you'll be bitch slapped by liberal Gothamist readers who all over sudden become ultra patriotic Bush ballz licking idiots.

Who shot Kennedy?

in some ways, the blackbox from flight 93 is the most chilling remnant of 9/11 for me. Not that you can rank any of this in terms of what is more horrifying. But the recorded sequence of events still makes me sick.

I wonder if the defense will make a strong case for
Moussaoui being a paranoid schizophrenic. They began that spin two-three years ago when they took on the case.
