West Houston Car Crash

2006_04_whouston.jpgA car apparently just drove onto a sidewalk on West Houston - into a building and hit three pedestrians. Anyone see what happened?

Update: It's at West Broadway and West Houston - a car crashed through that huge, gaping Con Ed project on the SE corner of WB and WH, onto the sidewalk and into Dos Caminos SoHo. Two pedestrians are injured.

Update: Looks like there was both a car and a SUV involved - the SUV went right into the window of the restaurant.

Update: We walked down there and took some pictures. No fatalities have been confirmed yet. Lots of rubberneckers on the scene:

Oh, and this cute dog was spotted at the scene. It had no comment.

Update: Ha! It turns out that the assistant chief of police was driving the SUV!

NBC is reporting that 2 pedestrians were killed in a crash at Houston and West Broadway. Couldn't see exactly where, but looked like it was right in front of Dos Caminos.

Sorry, you're right they were injured not killed. My bad.

there was also a car crash where 2 people were injured at canal and lafayette last nite. FUCKED UP the car too.

I have to drive my scooter around the dual ConEd projects at W. Houston and W. Broadway/Laguardia every morning and evening, and I, honestly, am surprised this didn't happen sooner. It was seriously the worst set up for an interesection ever. Southbound, they blocked the entire NW corner, forcing traffic to cross into the northbound lane. And, northbound, they blocked off the entire SE corner, forcing traffic to cross into the southbound lane.

WNBC says injuries to both pedestrians are "minor."

really? i just rode my skateboard through that intersection about an hour ago and i didn't see a thing!

That dog is butt-ugly

Were any of the people in the car or SUV or the pedestirans wearing helmets?

That dog is begging for a bath in BBQ sauce.

that dog looks GUILTY to me. maybe his cuteness caused the accident?

Most likely some idiot in a Benz yacking on the phone or something. I really think they lobotomize the owners when they get one, as they tend to be almost all horrid drivers.
And as for the first picture, There goes that Eyewitness News van again!

Who cares about the pedestrians, is the guacamole safe? Say what you will about the overpriced faux-Mexican cuisine, the guac at Dos Caminos is fucking jawesome.

That dog is super cute.

Strangely enough, i know this isn't NYC related, but there was a nice ol' accident on Long Island in East Meadow last night too. Was it a full moon or something?

The moon will be 100% full on Friday night.

This type of stuff happens ALL THE TIME, but largely goes unreported by the media unless it has some type of sensational angle. They point to drinking or distractions or malicious/psychotic behavior, but the underlying problem is pure physics of the automobile: MASS (4000+ lbs.) x ACCELERATION (25-40mph) = DEADLY FORCE to pedestrians, cyclists, other motorists, dogs, etc

Since everyone loves a pedant making an off-topic comment, I'm going to point out that glennardo has combined momentum (mass times velocity) and force (mass times acceleration). What's really going to mangle people is the rapid energy transfer of the impact (in this case, kinetic energy--mass times the square of the velocity--is the biggie).
