The Nets Have a Theme Song...

2006_04_Jayznets.jpg...and words escape us. Okay, fine: It's really, really goofy, which is probably about right for a sports team ditty (remember Let's Go Mets?) Nets part-owner Jay-Z chose the song from over 700 submissions, which makes us wish the other songs had been made public. It's by Michael Barnes, a 22 year old from Manhattan, and this is what Jay-Z/his press statement said, "In 'Going Hard' M Bars completely captured the intensity of Nets Basketball and the flavor of our game experience. He obviously put a lot of time into the song and demonstrated a lot of talent. We're a hot team and this song best matches our passion and energy." Yes, M Bars figured out a way to name check Bruce Ratner! Here's some of it:

We brought Kidd from the Suns
Vince from the Raptors
Elite in East
Since Erving was in the rafters
Check the skybox
Blackberry active
Making transactions
It’s Bruce Ratner!!
Will Develop Don't Destory Brooklyn write a song to counter this? There are also mentions of Richard Jefferson and Nenad Kristec - listen to an MP3 here. M Bars will perform the song at the April 19 season ender at the Continental Airlines Arena; the game is against the Knicks and will be broadcast on YES. Gothamist desperately hopes that the theme song performance will be aired.

ESPN on athletes making music. No mention of Yankee Bernie William's guitar playing, though.
