A Shout Out to All My Peeps

2006_04_food_gandalf.jpgEaster is right around the corner, which means that they've started to take over once again. They're everywhere you look, staring at you with their little brown eyes, dazzling you with their brightly colored exteriors: Peeps. People go nuts about them (some people go nuts while eating them, but that's another story). We're not sure why, exactly -- we're more Cadbury Cream Eggs fans, ourselves -- but Peeps fans are a dedicated bunch. There's an entire blog, Peep Blog, devoted to the sugary marshmallow critters, including a "Cooking with Peeps" section (talk about vomit-inducing; we retched just looking at the peppers and peeps stir-fry), and, of course, the Lord of the Peeps site, which re-creates the Lord of the Rings epic with, you guessed it, Peeps (in case you couldn't figure it out, that's Gandalf). There's even a site full of Peeps links, ranging from crafts, news, and art projects. The do-it-yourself Peeps lovers can even get into the act by making their own Peeps in the comfort and privacy of their own kitchens. Hey, whatever floasts your boat -- just don't call us when you get stuck in a permanent sugar high, junkie.

I would like to add one treat on here that has surely never been discussed. My girlfriend is a peeps fanatic, I would guess she consumes about 40 a week. Anywho. Her preferred method of eating them is to shove them on a knife to be roasted over the range (You'll need a gas stove). They are Peeps s'mores.

She calls them...

"Spores"

#1 Thanks for ruining my peep feast with this PETA sponsored guilt trip. I will still eat tons of them this Easter.

I too roast Peeps over a gas stove with a candy or serving fork. I find them best after a week of "aging" by exposure to air.

As far as Cadbury Eggs, I'd highly suggest battering and deep frying!

It's times like this that I hate this city. There is not a Cream Egg for miles. Every deli is the same: "Waaaah? eggggs? whaaaat you want? No. No eggs." and since Duane Reade runs this town and has decided not to carry them, they are not to be found.

Bryan - you can get them at TARGET. TARGET! I got a bag full a week or so ago, and they were on sale for $1.33 for four. They also had the mini ones. They also had Lindt carrot-shaped chocolates.

The Target store is one stop from Canal Street on the N train.

The cadbury eggs are all gone because stores start putting them out in January. How cruel!

It's fun to microwave Peeps. They expand. They can get pretty big.

I, too, prefer the Cadbury Cream Eggs. Party City on 14th St has a ton. Try Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens, too.

I'm also going to experiment with a Cadbury Egg cookie...

Love this headline!! That's the kind of thing that just reminds me forgive Gothamist its trespasses (cough, mugshot, cough).
