NYU Junior's Death: Hate Crime or Not
Police are looking for fifth suspect in connection to the death of NYU junior Broderick Hehman. Police have already arrested four teenagers who allegedly chased Hehman, who then ran into a car at Park Avenue and 125th Street and later died of his injuries. And the teenagers are only 13 and 15 years old. Though the police are not charging the four with a hate crime - they reportedly said, "Get whitey" while chasing him - because their intent was to rob Hehman, versus assault him due to his race, the ACLU's Norman Siegel and 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care's Eric Adams are asking for a meeting with Manhattan DA Robert Morgenthau to request that the teens be charged with a hate crime. Siegel said, "When Howard Beach occurred -- and it was white on black -- everyone was upset. This is similar. Somehow because this was black on white, people think it is different. No, it isn't." However, the Washington Square News says that his friends think Hehman would have been upset the way his death has become a spectacle.

Difficult to say. Were they chasing him because he was white? Or because they wanted to rob him and just happened to yell out 'Get Whitey!!'

This statement alone makes people uncomfortable, even though it is true (there may be a few exceptions of which I am unaware).

Why don't we maintain some sort of consistency? How come "whitey" isn't a racist term? It is. If using "nigger" during a crime is considered a racist remark (and i agree), then so should "whitey".

They totally targetted him because he was white. If it was a young black man who walked by and gave the homeless man a dollar, they probably wouldn't have said anything in the first place.

Thank you, Morgenthau for showing why conservatives always opposed the idiotic notion of "hate crimes". There was never any intention to apply these unnecessary rules evenly, they are just another way to pander to the usual special interest crybabies on the Left.

This whole hate crimes debate is ridiculous. Was it racially motivated? Probably at least a little bit. Does that change any part of this case? No.
5 kids chased another kid out into the street to rob him and he ended up dying after being hit by a car. If that sequence of events is to be captured under "Second Degree Murder" than so be it. It doesn't bring him back, 'hate crimes' legislation won't cure any social ill will or racism.
If you do something illegal and its captured under our already tediously large set of criminal law, than isn't that good enough? Crime with hatred towards race is no different than crimes with hatred towards gender, appearance, social status, whatever..
As expected "Hate Crimes" have just muddled what should have been an easy case (assuming you have credible witnesses). Worse yet, anytime a law is not enforced properly or evenly it breeds disrespect for the system from both criminals and the law-abiding public.
When you beat or kill somebody, whether you do it for his money, for sadistic pleasure, or because he took your girl, it doesn't matter. You show hatred for that person. All these stupid laws do, is tell criminals not to use racial epithets when commiting their crimes.

Why is Morgenthau so eager to die in office rather than retire? Even US Supreme Court Justices retire. Why do Manhattanites keep electing him?
Let's consider two scenarios:
1: Black gang members are stealing a car in a white neighborhood and white men beat them
-> hate crime, Jesse Jackson and other far left activist are on the march.
2: White college student gives money to a homeless person in a black neighborhood and gets killed by black gang members
- > not a hate crime, Jesse Jackson and far left activists nowhere near to be found.
You see a pattern here?
You liberals must be proud of yourselves. Maybe Yale or Harvard should accept these gang members as special students, just like the Taliban member (who is now a special student at Yale).
BTW. How long does it take for an episode of Law & Order to be written, produced and shown? You just know that Sam Waterston and Jack Thompson are already rehearsing their lines on this "ripped from the headlines" episode; with the usual twist, of course.

Hate crime? Yes.
If a gang of 5 white kids ran down the street yelling "Get the nigger" Sharpton would be screaming hate crime and racism. But because these alledged "outstanding citizens", as their peers have called them on TV and in the papers, are black, it's not yet a "hate crime".
They should be charged as adults and sent to, not a juvenile detention center, but to prison. They're useless slugs, with no benefit to this society.

As an african american, I agree w/ Bob in that the parents of the perpetrators if not hanged should at least be punished or humiliated in some way for raising such trash.
I disagree w/ Marilyn in that had a black person given a buck to a homeless person, he would have been left alone. Believe me, they probably would have gone after him too, particularly if he demonstrated that he had some cash on him. Unfortunately, life is cheap in poor black neighborhoods and criminals have no issues w/ robbing other poor black people--remember the 80's when black youth were getting robbed and in some cases shot for possessions like fila and nike sneakers, gold chains and box radios. Same as it ever was--now it's Ipods.

i'm surprised that "get whitey" can be equated with "get the n-gger" by people. true, the hate crime legislation distorts what should be a clear case. then again, what was the motivation of the hate crime legislation? wasn't it originally to provide stiffer sentences for assaults that had racial motives in the same way that rockefeller drug laws provide tougher penalties for certain classes of drugs?
