The Fulton Fish Market: After The Move

After months and months of delays the Fulton Fish market finally left Manhattan and moved its entire operations to Hunts Point at the end of last year. So how has it been affecting local businesses?

Eh, not so much.

Though neighborhood stores like Twin Donut and the Blue Eagle Restaurant, not to mention the many surrounding mechanics and handful of banks, expected to see a boost in customers when the market came to town it so far just hasn't happened. For starters, the market's 1-9 A.M. hours of operation don't lend themselves to lunch-time shopping sprees. Second:

The Hunts Point economy is narrowly focused, consisting mainly of junkyards and auto shops and the diners and banks that cater to their workers. Inside the fish market there is a full-menu cafe, one that doesn't smell strangely of paint primer like the Blue Eagle. There are also two coffee trucks, moved up from the old location on South Street, and an onsite bank, a branch of North Fork. It is perhaps the only bank in the city where you can cash a check at 2 a.m.

Of course, the market may still integrate with the neighborhood over time. They did, after all, move an entire well-established fish marketplace over the course of a weekend without missing a beat. We're wondering though, does anybody know of anywhere else that we could cash a check at 2 A.M.?
