If I remember correctly, I believe that LES actor who foiled the rapist pulled out his own [sex organ] when he was on The Wire.

The guy who chased the rapist and beat him with a metal pipe should have killed the rapist... I would have.

Julio Ortega was run over, not shot.

"off-duty and drunk police officer who shot photographer Julio Ortega. . ."

I thought he killed him with his vehicle. But this is not the first incident of a drunk cop running over someone. A few years ago, a drunk cop ran over and killed a young mother and her children in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Apparently drinking and driving is part of the cop culture in NYC--or maybe it's just plain arrogance. A lot of the cops in Brooklyn don't even bother to stop at the traffic lights when they're just cruising around the streets.

I recall that a previous Gothamist post mentioned that a collection was being set up to pay for Julio Ortega's funeral expenses.

Does anyone have any information about that?

that dude was so great on the wire.

if you read the weather report, the snow shower wasn't really sudden. it was forecast...just sayin'!

Ok, this is the second blatant error of reporting on your site...the cop ran the photog over in his car. Gee, is fact checking a lost art?

Holy cow, Ziggy Sobotka kicked some ass! Dave H is correct; PJ Ransome whipped it out on The Wire. From what I recall, he was pretty big for a little guy ;-)

To the LES hero,

I thank the heavens above that there is someone like you out there... a few summers ago, I was assaulted at delancy and eldridge in my own vestibule... he, too, pulled his [sex organ] out ...

my perp then robbed me of my personal belongings and my pride... leaving me with a horrible taste in my mouth of new york (no pun intended).

i never found out who he was... all i know was that he was of hispanic/latino origin.

when it was happening to me, i kept thinking "in this city of millions, where is there someone to help me - now when i need someone the most?"

thank you for changing my mind... there are people out there who are willing to stand up for what is right... to protect those who can not protect themselves.

thank you.

by the way, does anyone know if the perp was arrested? i wonder if this is the same guy who assaulted me.
