Could it be that the coyote that captured New Yorkers hearts when he was capture amid a Central Park visit died from mistreatment? The Department of Environmental Conservation is investigating the cause of death for Hal, and some sources say he was "aggressively hogtied" when being transported from the city to an upstate wildlife center. Hal did have heartworms, but apparently Hal suffered internal bleeding when he died. Another hypothesis is that he might have eaten rat bait, and some people think that using a catch pole to capture him may have caused too much stress to his poor system (we read that he was 35 pounds, which sounds light to us).
Martha Stewart commented about Hal's death on her program today, awkwardly saying that the coyote should have been freed before he died (or something like that) and that NYC is a bad scary place.

Before all the PETA people demand a (human's) head on a platter for this injustice, it WAS a wild animal that made it's way into the most urban area in the world. That stress alone could've put it in a state of shock. The wildlife people did the best they could in the situation, for its own protection and the protection of their own people.
As for criticizing the way he was caught? How else are you going to catch a wild animal in NYC? With an invitation to the W in Times Square? There was no other way to catch him in a timely manner. We all know that if he wasn't caught ASAP, the mainstream media would've caused everyone to PANIC because a man-hunter coyote was on the loose.
Moussaoui did it.
I'll bet Benepe is regretting calling all that press for the capture right about now.
Cool, a veterinarian commented first!
Coyotes are not dogs or wolves (although of course they are all in the same family)...they are only 3-4 feet long and weigh about 30-40 pounds. 35 pounds is average for a coyote, not "light" like your article suggests.
A coyote is smaller than a wolf and a little bigger than a fox, but much smaller than a large dog.
Coyotes are usually 50 pounds. They also have really small genitalia. I know cause I tried to suck one off.
I blame Ted Turner's Roadrunner.
Damn you edEx, beat me to it.
Let's follow the Administration's logic and round-up all the pigeons, ducks, and geese as well.
I won't be surprised if it was the pigeon he ate, which probably ingested rat poison. I'd hate to find out it was the workers' fault but I doubt it, considering the same methods were used to catch the Queens Zoo coyote in '99, and considering that coyotes can withstand a lot worse from their natural enemies in the wild. (Insert more overdone jokes about anvils, dynamite and the Acme Co. here.) Also, didn't they say he seemed to be in good health and was eating a lot after he was captured?
Well, it's nice to know they tried to do the best for him. Rest in peace, little guy.
This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard ever. I can't believe that any more tax dollars are going to be spent on this stupid coyote. They should've shot the damn thing in the first place, and skipped all the BS in between. Coyote's are pack animals, and any one that makes it's way from bumble-f*** NY all the way to the PARK on its lonesome is obviously crazy. God! It's amazing that the state can't adequately fund our public schools, but the DEC, whose budget request this year exceeded 1 billion dollars, has cash to spend on INVESTIGATING WHY AN INSANE COYOTE DIED!
George Bush is to blame.
dear shocked and awed,
i understand your shock and awe. if animals are causing problems for us humans they should just be shot. screw all this bs. jeez, we pay so much in taxes.
i have to go watch fox news now.
god bless america.

p.s. don't forget to steal money from the poor & give it to the rich.

Seems like everytime a we catch an animal we kill it.
we suck.
p.p.p.s Shoot Vanessa
Why do people have such disregard for animal life? It's still a LIFE. Not a human life, but a life nonetheless.
