Friendly greetings from the UK!

Bam Bam, you come across as a jerk...you jerk.

Chalk Grafitti should be no problem for these people because it causes no long term damage. Hell, if the police wanted to do something, the obvious thing would be a warning and give you guys some sponges to wipe it off again.

I have trouble believing the number of people getting all bent out of shape over this. I have even more trouble believing the police over-reaction to it. 26 hours behind bars for drawing in chalk (in fucking chalk for fuck's sake!) is completely ridiculous.

Added Kudos for The Prisoner quote! :D

Anybody who thinks for a second that the police were justified is a wretched human being. 'Course it's probably a very odd joke, but anyway, there was no heroin and no charge, just some people having fun on a sunny day.
The city is not shrinkwrapped. As long as people live here they'll want to change it and make it their own. That's what people do. If you think chalk will taint the Big Apple's pristine image then there are a couple million tired, poor, huddled masses living in the less fashionable and thus completely unimportant parts of the city who can give some better ways to keep the streets clean.
For god's sake they didn't hurt anybody and they didn't mean any harm. Did anyone ask them to clean it off? I would have helped.
Spare the rod and spoil the child? I pity your children.

Just having fun???? You idiots have to be kidding me...you think "having fun" gives you license to do what you did? The cops were completly justified in treating you the way they did. You're a bunch of spoiled whiney dorks who I'm sure will never amount to anything in your lives. Go home to mommy and daddy. Simon and Seth, perfect names for who you are, it figures.

i spent 26 hours in jail for this shit, was rather ridiculous. it wasnt free speech or defacement, it was us having a little bit of fun that didnt hurt anyone. everything was temporary, but the cops treated us like shit. noone was caught with drugs, though they mistook a bag of maple sugar candy my friend had for crack before they tested it. it was outrageous to waste my weekend like this, and thats not mentioning how many different ways the cops broke the law in processing us. they held us for 12 hours in the precint, denied food, water, or bathroom usage. one of the guys in the cell with me was a diabetic (arrested on a different charge) but his request for medical attention or a sugar level check after he realized he couldnt feel his fingers was delayed for 2 hours while the cops told him to wait. meanwhile, it was 6 hours after we had been taken in before the precint bothered to notify our parents. i resent how some people have made us out to be the villan of this piece, but our having fun was not a justification for how the cops had theirs at our expense.

after spending 26 hours in police custody (2 of them were released after 20 hours) we were released by the judge who basically said: "this is a bullshit charge. chalk is not considered grafitti and therefore the charges pressed against you are unjustified and you should not have been arrested to begin with. stay out of trouble for 6 months and it wont be on your records. get out of my face." i blame the qoutas.... and of course the two women

I know these kids. They are my friends from Stuyvesant High School. Yessir, they are some of NYC's best and brightest.
Honestly, I dont see anything wrong with what they did. I went down to Astor Place today and saw the cube (before i knew who was responsible) and I thought it was pretty awesome.
These people were just trying to unwind after taking a 4-hour SAT. Can you really blame them for wanting to unwind and act like kids after being forced to sit in a chair and fill in bubbles for 4 hours?

You can just do the same thing with netflix but say you didn't recieve the discs and just keep it and they'll send you another and you won't get caught. I want the boxes and stuff

TRUST ME. it's SO easy. i STOLE DVD's not the CD's if u go downstairs DVD galore and they dont seal it in hardcore plastic. so take a nail or a safety pin and slide it down the midddle of the opening of the DVD and stick your thumb in the case and press the little button and the dvd pops right out and you stuff it in your pants. i got away with 12 dvds(familyguyvolume1and2&others) and then when i went for the second time i got caught. i dont steal anymore though.

Just for the record, the "Jack" with the link and who said "And now New York City is safe again..." is not the same "jack" who has no link to their name and signs their posts in lowercase.

For the record I will say it again for the sarcasm impaired.

And now New York City is safe again. Who cares. It's chalk and the cube was designed for public interaction. Who cares? IT'S CHALK!!!!

And now that these filthey chalk whores are locked up this city is 100% safe again!

Semper fidelis!

Why hasn't anybody considered the fact that ARRESTING people for chalk art is ludicrous?

Why not just fine them $500? Then they can plead guilty, mail a check, and the city can use this "revenue" to clean up "graffiti".

don't you just love it when a public sculpture goes largely unscathed (save for a couple of stickers now and then) over the course of three decades... then suddenly, as soon as the sculpture is cleaned and refitted, some geniuses decided "wheee, let's draw all over it!"

I would like to commend you, Jack, for truly understanding what occured there that day.

It wasn't just people drawing whatever on chalk. No, what really happened is we got high, saw V for Vendetta, and then totally disregarded all laws and did whatever the fuck we wanted.

As a matter of fact, knowing that it costs the people of New York money to clean this up brings a joy to my heart unlike that which I have ever known.

How you deduced the sheer truth throughout all my obvious lies, how you saw the reality through my facade is beyond me.

Truly, jack, your powers of detection know no bounds. I only wish there was some other piece of public property to deface so that I might write praises to you all over it!

Hmm..."it actually IS free speech"
...
You know that part in the princess bride, when spaniard-guy turns to bald sicilian guy and says, "you keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means?"
Ya know the part I mean?
Right. I think there's a certain misunderstanding as to what free speech is. Free speech is the idea that people shouldn't be prohibited from saying something based solely on the content of their statements. That doesn't mean that they get to say whatever they want, whenever they want, on whatever they want. There has simply never been such a notion, nor should there be. Just like shouting "fire" is ok but shouting "fire" in a crowded theatre presents a problem, writing "gothamist.com" is ok but writing it on public property while standing on that property is no good. And I know that these kids are real excited cause they ate a batch of homemade brownies and saw V for Vendetta, and now they think they're fighting right along side that awesome dude in the goatee mask, but let's get a grip here, folks. Sure kids will be kids, but spare the rod, spoil the child.

I grew up with that cube, and if someone had spray painted on it I would be really pissed. That fact that this was just chalk allows me to feel less annoyed. But still, I do think that it's b-llshit to write all over someone's art, and think that just because the art is in a public space, your defacement of that art is free speech. That's b-llshit.

About those heroin girls. If they are the ones on Flickr, wow, those girls don't even look like they'd drink a wine cooler much less heroin. Are the heroin girls the two white chicks in the blurry picture, or the young white and asian girl on Flickr? If it's the girls on Flickr, then I officially am lost in my own city, because I would have bet the farm that the hardest thing those girls ever touched was 'maybe' weed or something. But hardcore heroin??! damn

Wait, I don't understand, why did you write gothamist.com on the Alamo?

Also, before everyone gets all crazy as to the interactive nature of it, why doesn't somebody just call up Tony Rosenthal and ask him if he minds if the NYU kids are using the cube to regress to elementary school?

But really, why did you write gothamist.com on the top? To assure that the bluej would post about it?

Yeah, "planting heroin random white folks in broad daylight" is pretty ludicrous. Everyone knows the fuzz only does that to black folks after midnight.

Boohoo, I wasn't the one who started it, it's cheap chalk...waahwaahwaah. I only hope that the arrests go on these idiots' records, but I gather its just a misdemeanor, so I doubt it.

Look, Bottom line these guys wrote the shit to assuage their egos and have fun. They are trying to defend their actions by saying it was for free speech when they were just trying to get their jollies off "look at me, I'm cool cause I'm writing on this sculpture that everyone loves, LOOK AT ME!" they wrote it at the expense of society's propriety and some have paid the price while the guy who started it all is gloating on flickr.

thats true, although all I meant to imply by the interactive statement is that it is totally free from the "LOOK, DON'T TOUCH" mentality of a whole lotta art. Once that border dissapears, it invites a whole slew of other things that regular art normally totally prohibits.

That would have been the shit if someone wrote "BUSH is Our SAVIOR", "Fuck ABORTION", "I hate Faggots" Or "IRAQ is AWESOME!!!" and watch those other pretentious guys squirm and then erase those messages to limit the other person's free speech. I hope the cops look at that dudes flickr site and arrest his Dumbass. and does he work for GOTHAMIST? cause that would be sad if he did.

"Don't taunt the cops when you are holding"
Remember that kids.
Also, remember that this thing just got repaired after being broken for years. At great cost.
And it is not ment to be "messed with", it is meant to be spun. The fact that it is interactive is not an invitation to do whatever you want to it. The second someone climbed up on it, game over. You think that same kid, or the ones on the ground, would not sue the city in a heartbeat if its pin broke and it toppled over?
This has nothing to do with "art" or "expression" and everything to do with public saftey- thus the cops.

don't be so dense, I don't expect someone with a hose to come waltzing along and clean it up, i'm saying thats all it'd take.

It is just colored powder, for crying out loud, brushing up against it will erase it. And its not even the good chalk, this was cheap economy type chalk.

Right, so 1 guy goes out with a hose to clean it up. Once it's gone, do we get to go back and do it again? If so, should the guy clean it up again? Should that just happen every single day of the year? Should we hire a guy with a hose whose exclusive job it is to clean up the witticisms of NYU freshmen wherever they want to write them? Here's an idea, contact the guy who designed the cube and ask if he's cool with everyone writing on it. Maybe he's fine with that. Then, go ahead and apply for an art installation where everyone's gonna chalk for a day. You'll probably get it. And that's what adults do--they handle their business. When these people start acting like adults, and not just expecting some guy with a hose to clean up after their play-time, maybe they'll stop being treated like children.

you know man, it wasn't everyone joining together to write one message, individual people wrote individual messages.

The "george bush sucks" wasn't mine, I thought it was dumb, but I respected it and left it there. It's downright incorrect to blame EVERYONE who drew chalk drawings for stupid message.

I hope those kids get anally raped in jail. WHO THE FUCK DO THEY THINK THEY ARE? To Chalk up the Cube when everyone has the right to enjoy an unblemished cube. Sure you could argue that chalk isn't really vandalism cause it's not permanent but They didn't just vandalize the cube. They vandalized the image of the cube in the minds of persons passing at that time. If you were walking past and saw this graffiti laden cube instead of the new pristine cube everyone was talking about then you'd feel awfully pissed off. These kids took that away cause they thought they were SPECIAL and had a MESSAGE that was better than everyone else's. How Pompous and Egotistical can you get. OOOOHHH George Bush SUcks? Never heard that one before. I hope they get 3 years for Narcotics possession.

its just really cheap colored powder, one guy and a hose could clean it off.

Plus, the cube was meant to be messed with, hence why it is spinnable.

Tax dollars have certainly been used for worse things.

And as for the Karl Rove thing? This didn't have a chance to degnerate, it only lasted a couple of hours.

Not to mention that the city's going to have to pay a maintenance crew to go out there and clean the thing off.

As of last night around midnight, it wasn't cleaned off. Hopefully they won't waste our taxpayers and just wait for it to rain.

Damn right, Jack. I'm all for expression, and I would be okay with these nimrods chalking up the sidewalks. But the cube? That's ALREADY art, it's someone ELSE'S vision, and they were defacing it. They also could have broken it, climbing on top of it. Not to mention that the city's going to have to pay a maintenance crew to go out there and clean the thing off. These kids may have a right to express themselves, but I have a right not to have my city defaced by jerk-off NYU freshmen.

1) "planted?!" What a totally baseless suggestion. Honestly, do you think cops are so horribly corrupt as to do something like plant HEROIN on random white folks in broad daylight at astor place? If they were willing to do things like that, would they ever lose a conviction? And what function would that serve? It would be a total waste of a bad set-up.
2) I think chalking is wonderful, and it's great for people to lose their pretenses for a little bit in this city.
BUT, last time I checked, children never chalked things like, "George Bush--he is gay," and, "God is Dead." And if you want to be able to write things like that all over public property, where does it stop? If interspersed between those cute angsty declarations, people had written things like, "abortion kills, you homo murderers?" How would you feel? And you might say now, "I'd appreciate the chance for open debate," but that's a load of crap. After a week or a month, the debate would degrade into a faceless, vicious game of public name-calling and insults. And before you know it, buses of bible-camp psychos would be coming to the city and rappelling down the side of grand central to chalk, "Karl Rove's a god" in 40-foot letters. And it's tough to enjoy the sun with crap like that ruining the horizon.

deng, i'm not referring to the heroin.

chalk, vandalizing? ever draw with chalk on the sidewalk outside your house? forget it, you're not worth it. i'm going outside to enjoy this day, while you can fantasize about your ideal security state where everything is neat and orderly.

Hope they find all those sickos who vandalized public property. "planted heroin" yeah, right. Probably Bush was behind this cover up.
