MTA Announces Two Months of Delays on the 4, 5

2006_03_30_lexington.jpg

Oh, the MTA. You love to keep us on our toes, don't you? Not content to keep the L out of commission seemingly half the year (granted, when "the silver bullet" runs, it runs swell) you've decided to mess with the East Side too! And not in the cock-tease, someday we'll build you a Second Avenue Subway line kind of messing either. Oh, no. For the next two months if you ride the 4 or the 5 express lines downtown you should expect to be delayed by an average of 10-minutes thanks to track work the authority is going to start on Monday.

In the long term the work that the MTA is going to be doing, between 86th and 14th on the downtown side, should be a good thing, and we have a hard time begrudging the MTA for trying, but man, considering how insanely crowded the Lexington lines can get during rush hour... We'll just take the local, thanks.

so, it'll be like every other day; no change.

Oh, good, more people on the 6. Can't wait.

You guys keep pushing high-tech initiatives for the MTA, but look at this from your sister site in SF. More high-tech = more breakdowns.

Man, whose job do we not want this week? BART spokesman Linton Johnson's. Poor Linton had to do yet another round of ritual apologies after a massive computer failure crashed BART for about two hours in the middle of the evening commute yesterday. It's been a pretty hellish month for BART, as you can see by perusing our Your Commute archives. (We're only posting on this because we assume SFist Jon has spent the night somewhere between Millbrae and San Bruno, hoppin' mad.)

BART just installed a new computer system to run the trains, and three completely-separate incidents have crashed the system every day this week so far. Because BART themselves didn't know how long it would take to reboot, they weren't able to give accurate time estimates -- and adding insult to injury, the first time they thought they got the system up, it crashed like five minutes later.

Can you guys stop whining about the L train every day? Move out of Williamsburg.

I just can't get a break! The damn L Train already has my heart rate up every day. And now you're telling me the last leg of my trip is going to be affected as well?

I think I'll take my bike over the bridge once it's warmer. This is out of hand.

(At Grand Central each evening, the 4/5/6 platforms are jammed pack with people just waiting to get on. And sometimes fights break out. I'm telling you, it's going to be a mess.)

Hey, L Train Whiners, how about you move out of posts like this and then our whining won't bother you so much.

And, the MTA will bring you another Manhattan-free #7 Weekend. Enjoy!

Seriously, when will everyone understand that the L train services more than Williamsburg?

The L goes all the way to Canarsie and lots of people, who live past the first 3 stops, rely on it. The service has been horrendous recently. Even in between the actual service suspensions the morning trains have been more sporadic and the afternoon ones, more crowded.

s, let's start a support group.

Wait, there's a more than Williamsburg?

Take the local? During rush hour or on the weekends? Definitely not a better option than the 4/5.

There will ALWAYS be some major project underway on the NYC subway. If you don't like it, move somewhere else and complain about freeway construction or the lack of subway service after midnight.

Exactly why we need bike lanes. Mass transit will always have problems and waiting. With Bikes, you just get up and go! C'mon all you 20, 30 somethings, get a little exercise!

get a bike and a new way of life

The 6 at 59th during rush hours is insanely jam packed, when you have to literally wait for two-three trains because you can't get on cars because it's full of people.

If only we had those transit workers that push people and packed them all in the train cars like they do in Japan!

Oh god, I'd pay good money to see that!
