Gothamist Gets Inked

2006_03_arts_tattoo.jpgGothamist is thinking about getting another tattoo. We have two right now (yeah, we're pretty badass) and we got both out of state. So our question to you, adorable little inked up readers, is where is a good place to get a tattoo in this city?

Right now we are thinking NY Adorned, which is apparently the best tattoo shop in the entire world, but we're open to other suggestions. In addition, if you know of any tattoo artists (with or without their own shop) who can design the design that currently resides in our head...that would also be helpful.

UPDATE: Apparently our friends at Thrillist had ink on the brain today too!

We think Gothamist is gorgeous as is and doesn't need any more physical alterations.

I got a tattoo by Stephanie at NY Adorned last October. It's a b&w line drawing on my arm. I think she did an excellent job and I love it. I have a friend who got a full color piece by Tom there a few years ago and she is the person who recommended Adorned to me. The prices there are the least expensive I have found in the city (I did a lot of research) and everyone there (save for the cashier girls in front) was really friendly, welcoming and talented.

NY Adorned has got some of the nicest people working there. Got my 2 tattoos done there by Stephanie. Highly suggest going to them mos def.

Patrick at MacDougal st tattoo (formerly of East Side Ink) did two of mine and he really is great. Fast, clean and he helped design mine. I highly recommend him.

when i got mine done it was still illegal in NYC. i went to a elio espana(the best on the east coast)at 'east side ink' when it was in an unmarked basement in alphabet city. he now has his own place in Brooklyn.....

as an aside, i took my cousin to patrick at the new east side ink (see above above) and he was good. it was my college graduation gift to her.

when my dad turned 60 he decided that what he wanted more then anything in the world was a tatoo.

after a few months of going from parlor to parlor he eventually settled on a guy named Anil Gupta.

when the actual day(s) came I went with him for moral support - it took two trips to get all the shading done - but Gupta was amazing. he basically freehanded from my dad's sketches a 3D series of glyphs around my dad's ankle. the whole thing was awesome: clean and professional with exactly the desired results (well, five years later my mom still refuses to talk about it but that's neither here nor there).

try Anil Gupta, he is by 4th or 5th st. amazing artist!

i agree with the flyrite post. they are amazing. I got 10 tats 4 of which are from them. mmmm tats

I know an amazing tattoo artist who's very talented and easy to deal with. Shoot me an email if you're interested and I'll pass on the contact info. I don't want to post his private email here.

if you really have the guts for a "bad ass" tattoo...paul booth at last rites.

I have been getting amazing work done by Ronda Holzer who works at Venus on 4th street between Ave A and B for the past three years.

I have a half sleave she designed and now am getting a coverup of a tattoo I got in college over 12 years ago and it looks awesome.

I went on vacation last fall and received so many compliments. I loved it.

Go see Ronda. You will not be disapointed.

I had one done by elio at flyrite as well... back in the basement place in alphabet city. Great artist and he helped change the design so that it would look better as it aged-- spaced out some of the lines so that when it spread and faded, it wouldn't be a mess.

Talk to Elio!

Definitely get in touch with Joy @ Pure Body Arts in Williamsburg.

Throw my vote in for Flyrite, too. I can't remember the name of the guy who did mine, but he did some excellent detail work.

Both Patrick and Scott at MacDougal are wonderful. Patrick's line work is distinctively delicate. His ability to develop your ideas into an illustration is wonderful. Scott's sense of color is like no other artist I have ever seen. His color is deep and saturated. I love and highly recommend the work of both.

Myles at bowery tattoo. He is an amazing artist, and does not overcharge like most tattoo artists in the city do. Bowery tattoo itself is very clean and professional. I have two tattoos from him and will soon be getting my third one. Here is some of his work:

sarahoc, your tattoo is black and white? can you do tattoos w/ white ink? i've been wondering about that for a little while....

DAREDEVIL TATTOO!! These guys know their shit inside out and backwards. Suggested to me by my hot punk rock tattoo freak friend when I wanted to buy a wedding present gift certificate for 2 tattoo freaks. They did 2 large pieces that included a very intricate Edward Gorey drawing (around his leg) and the Godzilla turtle on her back. Both the bride and groom have been inking themselves for many years and they claim that these are their "Pieces de Resisitance".

I think Gothamist should watch this:

Rising Dragon (www.risingdragon.com) on 23rd street in Chelsea is extremely immaculate and professional. I love the tattoos I got there.

if you feel like taking a ride on metro north, try big joe & sons in white plains. ask for adam. absolutely top notch work. not to mention they sell the supplies to just about everyone else out there.

Craig Rodriquez over at Hand of Glory on 7th Avenue in Park Slope is an amazing artist and tattooist. You should check him out.

"How much would you charge
to send this one to Panama?"

thanks for this topic gothamist- I am going to a get a tattoo soon too (it must be the nice weather....) and the links were really helpful! NY adorned's site gave me some great ideas and I'm thinkin I'll go there now!

Another vote for FlyRite here - definitely worth the money!

Ronda Holzer who works at Venus on 4th street between Ave A and B is the best.

She did a big tribal bat (original design) on my upper back a few years ago and it just looks awesome.

She has also done Robert Deniro's temporary tattoo's in Cape Fear and permanent tattoos on other celebrities.

I've been to both Fly-Rite and New York Adorned (Eric at the former, Stephanie at the latter) and was extremely pleased with both artists.

Eric's is a tad harder to see based on where I have it, but the sun that Stephanie did on my forearm has received a LOT of compliments. Her work is fantastic.

Stephanie @ NY Adorned!

The folks at DareDevil bought FunCity, it's an awesome shop Johnny Depp got his ink there, and they have multiple artist to pick from

You all are crazy! Regino or Troy over at Invisible NYC kill it! Thrillist got it right!

just because stars get their tattoos somewhere doesn't mean you should. in fact a lot of "stars" have pretty crappy tattoos so that's really not a reason to go to a place. you should reasearch the seriousness of the work and the tattooers, not the people who go there!
