According to Apple documents, the third retail store is destined for Manhattan's Flatiron district, near the Flatiron building at 22nd and Broadway. However, AppleInsider has been unable to rule out reports that the lease was actually inked for a location closer to Chelsea, at West 17th and 8th Ave. —Apple Insider

I work in the GM building and can tell you this:
a little history lesson: the land which the GM building occupies was once the Savoy Hotel.

The cube will be supposedly, "green" self cleaning glass which will house elevators and a spiral glass staircase to the New 25,000 ft. Apple Store. Also, allegedly, it will be a 24/7 Apple Store.

Apparently there will be minimal signage on the glass cube, business will be generated solely by "word of mouth"

Get used to it. The Times wrote that Windows will only become bigger and more bloated in coming years, trying to be all things to all systems. Or as the nice joke goes (that even Microsoft employees are admitting): What's the difference between OS X and Vista? Microsoft employees are excited about OS X...

I'm not a hipster, but I am an avid Mac user (since 1988). I live in Midtown East and can't wait to have an Apple Store nearby!

the news is that the outer-wrapping is off the cube-- as you can see in the curbed link, the old box was much larger. i predict that soon the inner cube will be revealed, and it'll turn out to be like 1'x1'.

more proof that apple isn't a company selling hardware, but a new religion with legions of devoted followers. i mean, look what happened the last time someone placed a big black cube in a downtown square:
kabbah

Em, you can find replacement ipod parts fairly cheap on ebay or froogle. My old 40gb ipod hdd died recently so I ordered myself a 60gb drive to replace it for about $180 before shipping. I shouldn't have to to fix this thing but it beats blowing another $300-400 on a brand new one.

Everyone I know is having some sort of ipod issue: battery, hard drive, etc. I don't want a video one I want the 40G one I have to work. I feel like they sell you on some idea that you are going to have this device for the rest of your life and 33 months later it conks out. To say nothing of the fact that the millions of ipod will be around long after were all gone.

Blasphemy!

This just means the hipster/wannabe/dork/nerd mac user population is moving toward midtown.

Whats next? A replica of the Astor Place cube in Times Square?

Diamond studded hackysacs at Tiffany’s??

yes, the black wood is just a temporary covering. all apple stores have their entrances covered in black plywood while they're being constructed
