Your Friendly Neighborhood Taqueria

2006_03_food_piomaya.jpgNew York Magazine shows some love to one of Gothamist's local favorites, Pio Maya, a teeny taqueria housed in the space that was briefly Von Singh's. The article gives props to their tasty tacos, and also rightfully highlights their roast chickens, which are flavorful, juicy, and pretty damn reasonable. You can't beat the quarter chicken with a choice of sides (we tend to get the rice & red beans) for $5.50, and if you ask nicely, they'll bring out some of their special hot sauce, which is fruit-based and packed with quite a bit of heat, but not too much that the flavor doesn't shine through. And did we mention they deliver?

    not a fan. had lunch there today after reading rave reviews and it is ok. i had the chicken super taco and the meat was over cooked and it was not that flavorful. sigh... where can a person get great mexican food in nyc!

  • I'm not a fan, I had their carne asada burrito and the beef was stewed, not grilled.

    Finally, NY is getting some decent Mexican -- it's been a long time coming.

    Tehuitzingo = (.)(.)

  • Tehuitzingo on 10th ave btw 47th and 48th is awesome. It's almost literally a hole in the wall -- you squeeze through a tight hallway to get to the grill area in the back of the store.

    It seems kinda sketchy at first, and they give you a funny look if you're a gringo, but hot damn is it good! The chorizo and potato taco is outstanding... two of which plus a bottle of Sangria soda only cost me $5.50. Sa-wheet! :)

  • We've had good Mexican in the neighborhood before, and we've had cheap Mexican, but never anyplace that was both at the same time. Until now. We have had a couple of meals at Pio Maya recently, and both have been complete gems and really affordable. Hallelujah. Totally agree with you on the roasted chicken, but the enchiladas are also mighty fine, and sides (like fried plaintains) are uniformly great.

    Mexican Red beans?

    Now I can enjoy farting up a storm and having explosive diarrhea at the same time.
