Flyers 6 - Jagr 3

2006_03_sjagrhatrick.jpgThe building was rocking to the chants of “MVP” and Rangers’ fans were being treated to a dominant performance from a player for the first time since Mark Messier left for Vancouver. It was a night when Jaromir Jagr looked unstoppable and the idea that the Rangers would lose seemed impossible.

All it took to remind the crowd of 18,200 that hockey is a team sport was a stupid penalty by Ryan Hollweg. After Jagr had scored his second goal to give the Rangers a 2-1 lead, Hollweg unleashed a vicious and illegal hit on R.J. Umberger, a former Ranger in name only. Hollweg earned a game misconduct and a five-minute major penalty for his hit and the Flyers capitalized for two goals to take a 3-2 lead.

It seemed as if that hit took the life out of New York because after they finally killed off the major penalty they gave up a goal on a bad turnover to make it 4-2. Jagr got his hat trick and brought it to 4-3, but Philadelphia kept them off the board and won 6-3. The loss brings the Rangers into a tie for first with the Flyers with only 13 games left in the season.

Hopefully the game also reminded Ranger fans that the team needs more production from players besides the guy who has been involved in about 48% of the team's goals if the Rangers are going to go deep in the playoffs.
