Invasion of the Bag Snatchers

2006_03_antitheftbag.jpgOoh, for all you folks who like go out but carry a bag full of goodies with you everyone, be careful about where you put your bag. There have been 54 bag thefts in the past six weeks at bars along Second and Third Avenues in Murray Hill and Lenox Hill, according to the Post's police sources. Bar employees are telling customers to keep their bags on their laps or within their sights, but we know what happens - you drop your messenger bag or purse after a long day of working for the man because you want to get your after work drink on and forget everything. Since it's spring, maybe it's time to clean out your bag, chuck the hobo bag, go with a slimmer model* that you can carry around more easily. And men, think about the European carryall.

And it seems like the bag thefts are hitting the class of New Yorkers mentioned in today's Observer article about the uptalk "Affect" accent. Gothamist is very scared, but we're not sure if it's because of bag thefts or Affect.

*Gothamist has successfully transitioned to a relatively smaller bag, but now we travel with multiple bags, as it's important to have a bottle of water, newspaper, magazine, movie stubs from three months ago, workout clothes and three half-packs of gum scattered all over with us at all times.

In after work bars, esp turtle bay and Murray Hill girls and guys need to learn that yes the bar may be packed with a nice crowd but that doesnt mean there isnt someone there who will swoop down and snatch your bag while your getting your friends a round. Be careful , never ever put your bag down if you do not want it stolen.

Glad to see someone talking about the "affect". God, I hate those boring bitches. Same mindless dweebs that don the flip-flops as soon as they see the first bitch on the train with them.

When I go out to eat/drink I tend to stick the messenger bag strap around one of my legs, so it is not going to get pulled away.

Jen, you successfully avoided addressing yourself and the Uptalking Affect. I can say from attending a few blog meets you've been at that you definitely (I'm sorry) fit the Uptalker category. Whether it's Affect or not, I won't judge. That said, you are one of the few Uptalkers I like. :^)

Be watchful of your coat/jacket also, if you hang them on a bar stool.
Thieves would rifle through your inside and outside pockets for a score. That's how Ipods are stolen.

it's easy to not have your bag stolen. Just stay home.

So basically, the "Affect" refers to women who never developed a mature voice. They still sound like shallow, bratty teenagers looking for "approval" from their peers.

Young European women can be a refreshing change to NY women who are "affected". They're usually smarter too.

I just don't get what this dialect is supposed to sound like. In the city I hear all sorts of accents, from pretentious intellectual nassl to affecting faux-Brooklyn but I can't identify this Uptalk stream. The Observer article did a terrible job with it!

Teddy"

(APPLAUSE!!!!) Bravo.

I absolutely hate uptalk. Though men engage in it, women are the absolute worst. It makes you sound so, so, so dumb.
