Now Broadcasting: SportsNet New York

2006_03_ssny.jpgWhat the Yankees have, the Mets must also have. At least when it comes to television networks. Today, Sterling Entertainment, Time Warner, and Comcast launch SportsNet New York, a 24-hour regional sports network. The network will carry as many as 125 Mets games in its first season and will be the "official" TV home of the New York Jets. Of course, they won't be carrying any actual Jets games, but that's a minor detail. In addition to the Mets and Jets, the channel will carry basketball and football games from the Big East and Big Ten. That's great news for Gothamist as we can't get enough Big Ten action.

New Yorkers, and especially Mets fans, may recognize some of the names and faces for the network. Gary Cohen has stepped out from behind the microphone to join SNY along with Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez. We've spent many a night listening to Cohen on WFAN and can't say how happy we are to see him at the network. Too bad we can no longer tune into him on The Fan. Gary Apple, formerly of WCBS, is also joining the network's sports coverage.

While we look forward to the season with SNY, we've got one small problem. SportsNet NY has yet to hammer out a deal with DirecTV yet. Please, please solve this before the baseball season starts.

  • I have heard that SNY is very close to a deal with DirecTV.

  • Before they named the network, back when they first announced the concept of its existence, I started calling it the Mets Entertainment & Sports Network: MES(s).

I refuse to call it SNY. MES is much funnier.

    And I'm a Met fan.

This is such a joke. Why are we required to chip in for the outrageous salaries of professional baseball players and their billionaire owners simply because we subscribe to cable or satellite TV? I don't even waste my time with baseball until the playoffs and then it's on free broadcast channels.

It cable and satellite were required to make channels available a la carte professional sports would be in a bind. Take away their free lunch on stadiums, too.

yeah but time warner is also taking away game show network effective in april.. no more nightly viewings of gene rayburn on the match game or richard dawson on family feud.. i'm already starting to feel the withdrawal

  • they still have as many as 25 games on channel 11.

Is this going to take away from air broadcasts on UPN 9 or supplant the ones that used to be shown on FSNY? C'mon Mets! You are the team of the people, that's why we love you.
