Last Time to Lace Up Your Skates

2006_03_iceskate.jpgWith the proposed chill coming this weekend, we thought it would be a good to remind everyone that the city's ice skating rinks will be closing on April 2. Yes, the Pond in Bryant Park has been closed since January and Prospect Park's rink closed last weekend, but there's still the Abe Stark Rink at Coney Island, World’s Fair Ice Skating Rink in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the Staten Island War Memorial Ice Skating Rink in Clove Lakes Park, and Lasker Rink and Wollman Rink in Central Park. And speaking of toe picks, has anyone seen The Cutting Edge 2 on ABC Family yet?

And we did a little exploring of the Parks Department's website: The list of invasive "do not plant" plants is surprising, you can meet Atka the wolf (and learn about wolfology!) on March 19 in Staten Island, and this month's park is Canal Park.

Bryant Park will unlikely offer free ice skating next year. I spoke with several of the skateguards and was told the operation barely broke even. Sponsor Citi took sizable losses on it. I made the most of this season though, I was at Bryant Park at least twice a week.

I would much rather bump into a grown adult, as I can careen off them and continue on relatively unobstructed. I skate well enough to avoid most problems at the rink.

  • Thanks for the reminder. I only used my skates once this winter so far.

  • The last time I went ice skating was a few years ago at the Wolman Rink in Central Park. The only reason I decided to do that was because I saw it on Law & Order the night before and thought it would be a fun idea. It was, until this litte kid darted in front of me and just stopped, given the spacial conditions of the rink I had two options: crash into the kid or just stop. I chose the "just stop" option, which lead to me stopping and falling backwards on my back, as I did not have room to properly stop since I have hockey skates. Moral of the story, it is not a good idea to do things you see on Law & Order.
