Space for Rent

2006_03_sesb.jpgApparently working in the Empire State Building doesn’t hold the cache it used to. According to the Daily News, the vacancy rate in the building has risen to 18% from 1.7% in 2000. To make matters worse, they are asking 25% less per square foot, $48, than most of the average rents in midtown.

While we understand why people aren’t eager to sign a deal with the “Queen of Mean” Gothamist doesn’t want to see the building revert to the “Empty” State Building, so we have some ideas for prospective tenants. Since King Kong climbed to the top of it, why not a Discovery Store in the bottom? Lots of movies have been filmed there, so how about a Blockbuster? For now, you can always go there and catch up on your sleep.

Any chance most of the vacant office space is located on the upper floors. ;)

Lot's of pural word's have apostrophe's mistakenly added to them. [GRAMMAR CHECK!]

I worked in an office there. It sucks. The building itself is cool, but you have to wade through hordes of tourists to get in and out of the building, the security guards are real assholes, 34th street is probably the worst street in manhattan to commute to and from because its innundated on a daily basis with tourists and people going to the cheeseball stores. The day I was gone from there, I felt a weight lifted from my shoulders and a feeling of freedom that was beyond compare.

"Apparently working in the Empire State Building doesn’t hold the cache it used to."

You mean cachet, not cache.

yeah, don't think a couple of ground floor retail tenants is what they have in mind...

WHOA! nobody wants to work in the BIGGEST TERRORIST TARGET IN THE WORLD! WHY NOT?

user-pic

No, but not because of the terrorists, more due to the horrifying subjugation of watching teen girls shop and people who think they are "worldy" for shopping at Macy's.

From what I understand, the offices aren't really designed for modern companie (open, shared space). Rather, it's full of small offices better suited for doctors and private eyes and stuff. They can probably get better space elsewhere.

Working in Midtown in punishment enough. Why would you want to torture yourself even more by having to fight throngs of moronic tourists to get into your terrorist-target building to go your crappy job that you hate. Plus, the food in that area totally stinks.

If I had a business, that is probably the last place I would have my office. Just fill it with crappy tourist stores since they all want to go there anyhow. In fact, we can take all those lame stores/restaurants along that part of 5th Ave/34th Street and stick them all in there. And the tourists can be confined to there.

The ESB is almost 80 years old. 34th Street is really Midtown South anyway. Times Square to Rockefeller Center and through over to Park Avenue is where they trophy buildings are. 42nd to 57th, Eighth Ave to Park Ave.

As for terrorism, I don't think that the ESB is any more likely a target than any other. If the stated goal of OBL is to cripple our economy then you assume they are moving on to bigger and more valuable targets, especially considering the length of time and effort they put into their planning.
