Things You Already Knew: The MTA Hates To Clean

2006_03_12_elevator.jpgIf you've used the MTA this should come as no surprise to you: "Many of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's outdoor properties are poorly lighted and rarely cleaned, making them magnets for 'litterers, dumpers and graffiti vandals,'" according to a City Council survey to be released today.

The worst offender? The D,M Borough Park, Brooklyn stop which got a 3.048 rating from the city with 1 being the best and 4 being the worst. In fact, of the 24 outdoor MTA sites which the City Council randomly checked up on 16, or 67 percent, were found to be "dirty" or "poorly maintained" and 18, or 75 percent, were "plagued with heavy illegal dumping."

"No New Yorker should have to live next to an illegal dumping ground where garbage decays and rots." Council member Eric Gioia said on the matter. "If private landlords leave their property in this state, they're hit with tickets, fines and violations."

So now we have a report that proves what we already knew. So, does anybody think that having it written in a report make any difference?

Umm not to say the MTA is right..AT ALL..

but take into account the lazy bastardos that put the trash there in the first place..chinese food on the floor..bottles rolling around..spilled beverages..gum on the seat..random trash thrown underneath your seat..how about this one..fingernail clippings on your seat..what is with THAT! gross!

  • Ew.

I especially enjoy the new NO DUMPING signs at the City Hall stop on the J train. Like, does this mean the MTA actually has to CLEAN UP the stop so it doesn't look like a dump?

  • SAME IN LIC

HERE HERE. The 7 Train is down every other weekend in Queens. Not to mention that the areas around the train are glazed in pigeon poo. Disgusting. And embarrassing. People go to jail for doing less. Cheers to Eric Gioia.

the mta is the worst -- seems like the Ls been down for years. and it's a mess. that's beyond illogical. thanks for fighting for the boroughs gioia.

  • Outer Borough Dweller

The Council report is now online. Their pictures of garbage and graffiti looks a lot like my neighborhood, alas.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that "elevator" an escalator?

Which reminds me, [Andy Rooney mode on] wouldn't "down elevator" and "down escalator" be oxymorons? [Andy Rooney mode off]

The city should have control of the MTA. Only people like gioia and the city council care about being responsive to real people's concerns. i hope they shame the mta into doing something. all the mta cares about is manhattan below 96th st (if that).

  • Should we be shocked by this?

No. We expect the poorly mantained stations to be in the outer boroughs or in lower income areas. We know it is wrong, but just say, "That is the MTA. Typical."
