It's midterms week and you've broken out into a rash. But it's not because you're worried about your GPA - you've got bedbugs! Some poor freshmen at Columbia University are being evacuated from their rooms in John Jay Hall in order for housing services to fumigate the rooms. And not only do they have to evcuate, they need to "completely empty their rooms." The Columbia Spectator notes the craziness of the fumigation scheme, given that it is in the middle of exams, with one victim asking, "Couldn’t they fumigate over spring break, when, even if people are staying at Columbia, they won’t have academic schedules to be disrupted?” Not at Columbia - they are serious about bedbugs, for fear they might travel to other parts of John Jay and perhaps require housing services to buy new mattresses for the entire dorm! Okay, we're just guessing that, but now that we think about the mattress situation that we all go through during college-housing days, it's disgusting. Perhaps getting a vinyl zippered 16" deep mattress cover (just $12.99) from Bed Bath and Beyond would be helpful.
Gothamist on bedbugs.

OMG. They are NEVER going to get rid of bedbus in that dorm!! Given college students' habits and questionable hygiene, they will not do what is necessary to eliminate the problem. I have wathced my girlfriend go through bedbugs hell, with an insane regemen of vacumming and dry cleaning and laundry -- and SEVERAL series of fumigation. Her problem was finally resolved but it too A LOT of work -- something I do not think the college kids will do, what with class loads and finals and party-hardy-ing.
P.S.: BRING BACK DDT!!!
DDT ME ASAP!
vinyl is one of the most toxic materials made. not the best choice to lay your body on for several hours every day.
Remember this game?
Bedbug bites build character.
Suck it up girlie-men
There was a call for a bed bug task force from City Councilwoman Gail Brewer back in January as it seems to be a growing problem.
The thing is, I don't see how preventatively fumigating my room is going to solve anything. In college, everyone hangs out in everyone's room, and in a lot of dorms, there's not space for much seating other than beds. I guess bedbugs are awful (I wouldn't know, as I don't seem to have them), but I'm really confused as to whether we'd be able to really get rid of them anyway.
At least Columbia's going to be footing my drycleaning bills...
Our mattresses are already coated in plastic. I really doubt they'll have to be replaced.
In any case, I'd rather be living in the Hartley than John Jay. Especially during midterms. Lucky kids to get moved. But, a pity they're only moving FIVE PEOPLE to contain the spread. The others will self-quarantine?
John Jay's really not so bad. Making the choice over again, I might choose Hartley, but it's not great enough that I'd actually WANT to move here mid-semester (like I've just done, phew).
But yeah, no one's self-quarantining. If there's a big problem, they can't control it in this way.
Yeah I really don't know how they're going to quarantine the bugs just by fumigating 5 rooms. The bugs will probably embed themselves into luggage and follow into Hartley anyways.
This might be the first time I actually consider my Wien single to be better than John Jay =P
