Manhole Takes Down SUV - And Firefighter

There's something up with everything that Con Ed seems to have control over. Okay, fine, it's not a blackout or anything of that scale, but after the various stray voltage zappings of people and pets, should we be so surprised that a manhole that exploded on Saturday night was so powerful that a parked SUV was knocked over? And, as it happens, the SUV then basically flew onto a firefighter's head. It's a totally crazy and somewhat miraculous story: The Daily News says Marc Kroenung was putting out the manhole fire in the Bronx, and when the Cadillac Escalade somehow flew up and then crashed down sideways, "with the driver's side window shattering against Kroenung's helmet as the auto crashed to the pavement. He was left standing inside the overturned SUV." Kroenung is fine - he only needed five stitches - and he credited his helmet with saving him. Con Ed thinks that the underground fire started because snow and salt corrosion of wires in a service box. It doesn't sound like there's enough manpower to watch over all the service boxes in the city - what will Con Ed do?

Is it me or is this becoming a recurring theme with New York City infrastructure. Something radical will no doubt need to be done. We live in a thriving modern megalopolis that is built on an aging frame. It began with the highways, continued with subways and now it is the electrical grid. While everyone is piling on Con Ed for failure to keep up with the various problems, they should keep this in mind. There probably isn't a solution short of a complete revamp of existing systems which will be heinously expensive and inconvenient for the residents of the city. So it's either live with random shocks and quit complaining about them or start investing our time and money now.

Wait, wait, wait. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this SUV story. So a manhole cover under an SUV explodes and throws the SUV skyward. The SUV tilts sideways in mid-air then slams down on a firefighter who happens to be standing where the driverside window comes down, so that his helmeted head smashes through the window and leaves him standing inside the SUV, which is now laying on its side. Just an ordinary day for the NYFD, I suppose. WOW!

Yipes! That was major luck on his side..

Never underestimate the power of the "crash-helmet"

Marc Kroenung is most likely the luckiest member of the FDNY.

That is a serious Looney Tunes/ Wile E. Coyote / Buster Keaton situation with the SUV. I wouldn't know whether to start laughing or crying hysterically if I found myself standing inside an overturned car that just landed on my head.
