Downtown is great, Forever is very good, but the best Hamill is A Drinking Life. More of the same, only better... real better...

as a wonderful corollary to this book, might i humbly suggest Mark Helprin's "Winters Tale" essential reading for those that wish new york is what it was

I just started this book but I MUST insist that everyone read Hamil's "Downtown". One of my favorite books of all time, and I challenge anyone to start reading it and not want to walk outside and 'follow along'. To all the transplants that are inhabiting williamsburg and the LES, you need to read this stuff, along with "Low Life" to understand why you're here.
